We found this article titled, "9 Things Sewists Do That No One Understands."  Well, we weren't even sure what a "sewist" was; so, we had to read the article.  Turns out, the author wasn't really sure either.

And, if you are a "sewist," don't take this personally...

Captain John went to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the AQS show in 2012 and came back with images of Egypt. Here are the fabulous quilts of Jenny Bowker along with images of pieces by her friends the Tentmakers of Cairo. Jenny was the curator of the Stitch Like an Egyptian Exhibit featuring the Tentmakers of Cairo. The appliqué work has to be seen to be believed and, as you can see, the prices in the last four years have doubled.

Would you like to own an appliqué of your very own?  TQS is giving "Karnak Gate" away and you could win.

Would you ever consider using a flat sheet as a quilt back? Many quilters, say "never."  Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs has a different opinion.

Cheryl hated piecing quilt backs and found them to be quite costly, so she decided to experiment with flat sheets.  Click below to find out what she discovered.

It is SO much fun bringing new quilters into the fold!  This little spiral bound book is a great way to introduce people to the pleasure of quilting!  With just ONE simple block and 12 easy layout options smashing results are ensured. Of course Alex went with her favorite, the star set.  The book covers everything a beginner needs to know - from choosing fabric to binding. This little gem has 47 pages packed with information even a "seasoned" quilter seeking a fun and easy weekend project will want.

"This is a short and sweet, compact yet comprehensive guide to making a quilt for the first time. It also lies flat, leaving your hands free and is super easy to follow with very clear instructions and photographs. This book is a little gem for any beginner quilter." - www.yarnsandfabrics.co.uk

Posted by the Modern Quilt Guild:

The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild is collecting quilts and blocks for the victims of the shooting at Pulse nightclub on June 12, and MQG members around the world are invited to participate. The goal is to gather enough quilts to help not only the victims who survived, but the families of victims who perished, as well as first responders, nurses, police officers, etc.

The Orlando MQG is asking for a minimum of 102 quilts — one for each survivor, and one for the families of each victim who perished. Any quilts that surpass that number will be given to first responders, and then distributed to the LGBT community in Orlando via organizations like The Center and Zebra Coalition.

Rainbow hearts are the design theme, and members are asked to submit either finished quilts (strongly encouraged) or 10-inch blocks with at least one heart. See the gallery below for block and quilt ideas, or visit our Pinterest board for more inspiration. You can also use this tutorial for a 10-inch heart block by Cluck Cluck Sew (or this paper piecing version by Elizabeth Dackson).

If you’re part of a guild, we encourage you to sign up as a whole guild and coordinate locally to make a finished quilt (or quilts). This will help ease the strain on Orlando MQG members. They’re asking for quilts larger than 48″ x 60″ but no larger than a twin. The Orlando MQG is also accepting quilt tops, binding and backings.

Click the button below for further information on how to participate.

Blocks are due August 15 and quilts are due September 15. Thank you for your support!

Alex and Ricky enjoyed the talents of the irrepressible Mark Lipinski on the set of Show 1813: Quilts of Valor and Intent.

Mark talks about making Quilts of Valor and recounts how he met the Vietnam Vet whose remembrance bracelet he wore in the 70s. Having held many jobs in the quilting industry, he discusses magazine publishing, online show hosting and participation in many quilt-related projects. He candidly talks about his loss of enthusiasm for quilting and how he gained it back via a more mindful perspective, which he learned from the Slow Food movement. Since Mark "lost" a quilt for six years, he also talks about the importance of documenting quilts and shares an easy way to label a quilt in the form of a letter. He is currently working on his life legacy quilt blocks, a work in progress that captures the big moments in his life.

Show 1813 debuts Sunday, June 19, 2016.
