Would you ever consider using a flat sheet as a quilt back? Many quilters, say "never."  Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs has a different opinion.

Cheryl hated piecing quilt backs and found them to be quite costly, so she decided to experiment with flat sheets.  Click below to find out what she discovered.

What about using that same type sheet at backing, too?
I want to keep my king size quilt from getting too heavy. ???

I have used sheets for backing. They were usually 50/50 cotton and polyester. Many years ago.

 the first time I used a sheet as quilt backing was because I had saved one of my children's daintily flowered flat sheet (44 yrs old), just for memory sake....I decided to use it as a backing on a small hexagon "grandma's garden" tablecloth..... .the sheet was soft, and well used over the years. I couldn't have asked for a nicer way to preserve the sheet instead of it being tucked away in a trunk or on a shelf. A flat sheet is my backing choice now, not only for the elimination of piecing, but also dollar-wise.

I have used sheets for quilts and when I first started quilting was told to buy them for the backs!

When I finish the top, I buy a sheet to go with it, for the back. I cut the hems off, because the needle holes still show if I take them out. Needle holes may show if something needs to be done over, too.

I have used sheets for backing when I hand quilt. I use the 100% cotton sheets with the lower thread count and pre wash them. I find it works fine.

I have used a sheet for backing a couple of times. One was for a quilt for the bed in our travel trailer, it was easy to quilt, has held up fantastic.
I wouldn't use one for an heirloom quilt, or a prized gift for someone, but for everyday quilts I see no reason not to. :)

I have quilted with sheets on my Gammill Longarm machine for clients, and it works great. They need to be washed and hems removed first. Restless

Depending on my project, I have used sheets for backing for some time. I find I do not tell a lot of other quilters I do this, for the looks that I receive. But it makes perfect sense in today's economy. Way to go and thank you for backing up, people like me.
