The exhibition "Looks Can Be Deceiving: Frida Kahlo dresses" is the first exhibition of the artist's wardrobe at the Museo Frida Kahlo, in Mexico City, Mexico. This exhibition presents a new interpretation of Frida through her wardrobe, which was discovered in 2004 in her bathroom.

The site is in Spanish, we have done our best to translate the meaning of the exhibit below. When you are on the site, just click on the boxes for the photos to enlarge.

The central premise of the exhibition explores the identity of the artist, expressed through the striking visual image constructed based her clothing. Much has been spoken of love as the driving force and political convictions of Frida as leverage to wear ethnic clothing. This exhibit offers tradition and her physical disabilities as two new components that fed the painter's decision to wear traditional clothing. The style of Frida has been inspiration for international designers such as Ricardo Tisci and Jean Paul Gaultier, who based his spring-summer 1998 collection titled Homage to Frida Kahlo on her style. The artist remains a source of inspiration for these designers, establishing a bridge between past and present.

Painter Frida Kahlo was a Mexican self-portrait artist married to Diego Rivera and is still admired as a feminist icon.

We found this article titled, "9 Things Sewists Do That No One Understands."  Well, we weren't even sure what a "sewist" was; so, we had to read the article.  Turns out, the author wasn't really sure either.

And, if you are a "sewist," don't take this personally...

Captain John went to Grand Rapids, Michigan for the AQS show in 2012 and came back with images of Egypt. Here are the fabulous quilts of Jenny Bowker along with images of pieces by her friends the Tentmakers of Cairo. Jenny was the curator of the Stitch Like an Egyptian Exhibit featuring the Tentmakers of Cairo. The appliqué work has to be seen to be believed and, as you can see, the prices in the last four years have doubled.

Would you like to own an appliqué of your very own?  TQS is giving "Karnak Gate" away and you could win.

Would you ever consider using a flat sheet as a quilt back? Many quilters, say "never."  Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs has a different opinion.

Cheryl hated piecing quilt backs and found them to be quite costly, so she decided to experiment with flat sheets.  Click below to find out what she discovered.

It is SO much fun bringing new quilters into the fold!  This little spiral bound book is a great way to introduce people to the pleasure of quilting!  With just ONE simple block and 12 easy layout options smashing results are ensured. Of course Alex went with her favorite, the star set.  The book covers everything a beginner needs to know - from choosing fabric to binding. This little gem has 47 pages packed with information even a "seasoned" quilter seeking a fun and easy weekend project will want.

"This is a short and sweet, compact yet comprehensive guide to making a quilt for the first time. It also lies flat, leaving your hands free and is super easy to follow with very clear instructions and photographs. This book is a little gem for any beginner quilter." - www.yarnsandfabrics.co.uk

Posted by the Modern Quilt Guild:

The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild is collecting quilts and blocks for the victims of the shooting at Pulse nightclub on June 12, and MQG members around the world are invited to participate. The goal is to gather enough quilts to help not only the victims who survived, but the families of victims who perished, as well as first responders, nurses, police officers, etc.

The Orlando MQG is asking for a minimum of 102 quilts — one for each survivor, and one for the families of each victim who perished. Any quilts that surpass that number will be given to first responders, and then distributed to the LGBT community in Orlando via organizations like The Center and Zebra Coalition.

Rainbow hearts are the design theme, and members are asked to submit either finished quilts (strongly encouraged) or 10-inch blocks with at least one heart. See the gallery below for block and quilt ideas, or visit our Pinterest board for more inspiration. You can also use this tutorial for a 10-inch heart block by Cluck Cluck Sew (or this paper piecing version by Elizabeth Dackson).

If you’re part of a guild, we encourage you to sign up as a whole guild and coordinate locally to make a finished quilt (or quilts). This will help ease the strain on Orlando MQG members. They’re asking for quilts larger than 48″ x 60″ but no larger than a twin. The Orlando MQG is also accepting quilt tops, binding and backings.

Click the button below for further information on how to participate.

Blocks are due August 15 and quilts are due September 15. Thank you for your support!

We recently wrote about The TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team - see more information below.

TQPM has put out two calls for kennel quilts:

The TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team has received a request for kennel quilts from the St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center. They would appreciate having more kennel quilts as they have rescued over 250 puppies from a bad situation.

Their address is:
St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center
575 Woodland Road
Madison, NJ 07940

And, they just received a request from the Fort McMurray SPCA in Canada, for kennel quilts due to the fires.

They know the cost of shipping kennel quilts to Canada is not cheap, so they are asking their Canadian TQPM Kennel Quilt Team members to help them. Of course anyone can send quilts.

The address is:
Fort McMurray SPCA Shelter
155 MacAlpine Cres.
Fort McMurray, Alberta T9H 4A5
Canada

---------------------------------------

The TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team was formed after Hurricane Sandy to help animal shelters affected by disasters. Started by TQPM (The Quilt Pattern Magazine - an international, digital-only publication), it is partnered with the Petfinder Foundation.

The TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team is a volunteer organization available whenever disasters strike - a way to join a larger effort helping our animal friends in times of need by doing what we love. There are over 500 members.

How It Works:
When disasters strike, TQPM checks with the Petfinder Foundation to see if there are shelters in need of assistance.

Whenever Petfinder receives a request, the shelter's information is immediately sent to TQPM, which responds with a call requesting the correct mailing information - a necessity in case shelters have been severely damaged, and alternate housing has been set up. TQPM then sends an email to the TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team with the shelter's information and posts the request to their Facebook page.

The TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team springs into action making Kennel Quilts and sending them to the shelter along with a form explaining the Kennel Quilt program and naming the partners. Members also send TQPM a picture and the number of Kennel Quilts made, which is then posted on both the website and the Facebook page. To date over 5,500 Kennel Quilts have been sent to shelters all over the US.

Partners:
Aurifil Threads is a partner and is offering a Small Kennel Quilt Thread Kit with proceeds from the sales going to help the Petfinder Foundation. The thread kit contains colors which are all “pet” colors.

BERNINA USA is also a partner and introduced a 350 SPECIAL EDITION BEST FRIEND in January 2016 complete with a paw print faceplate. BERNINA has donated $30,000 to the Petfinder Foundation. BERNINA shops all over the US are holding Kennel Quilt Workshops through the Best Friend Initiative.

Island Batik Fabrics is introducing new fabric lines at Fall Market 2016 that will be paired with the Aurifil Kennel Quilt Thread Collections.

Join The Team:

There are almost 500 members on TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team. On the team page is all the necessary information regarding how you can join the TQPM Small Kennel Quilt Team.

There are: FREE Kennel Quilt Patterns, guidelines for making the quilts with animal safety in mind, current needs, the TQPM mailing form, mailing costs, videos, our partners, and pictures of Kennel Quilts that have been sent. There is a sign-up button to join the team, as well as a link to the Facebook page. Team members receive all the latest information regarding Kennel Quilt requests. TQPM sends an email whenever there is a request and posts to their Facebook.
