On the Day God First Made the Stars
Name of Maker: Carlene Buck
On the Day God First Made the Stars - My friend Jan Berkley gave our quilting bee a demo on using the Tri-Recs tool. I made a few batik stars. I started with a background fabric which was off-white with flying cherubs in gold on it. When I ran out of that I switched to muslin. It made me think of the joy the angels felt when they viewed the first starry sky. I placed a large muslin triangle in each corner to represent the shape of the planet earth.
Armistice....Mom, I'm home! (back)
Name of Maker: Carlene Buck

Dennis' Quilt
Name of Maker: Shawn Priggel
Dennis' Quilt - My friend, Dennis, asked me if I would make a quilt for him. I let him choose the pattern from a book I have which was perhaps a mistake as each block has 73 pieces! I had never made anything with so many pieces, but I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised at how it turned out. The pattern in the book is called San Diego Sunset - I think because of the colors used there (Batiks in yellows/oranges/pinks) My friend wanted a hunter green in the borders and I took it from there.
Holocaust: A Hate Movement
Name of Maker: Carlene Buck
Holocaust: A Hate Movement - I visited Yad Vashem, Jerusalem's Holocaust Museum in 1991. God inspired me to make this quilt. The blocks, first in 30's fabrics and then in solids, tell the story of the Holocaust in chronological order. Black (hate and death), red (blood), brown (Nazi uniforms) and orange (fear) tell part of the story. Block titles, such as, Memory Block, Star of David, The Stockade, Boxcar Patch, Robbing Peter to Pay Paul, Nothing Wasted and Lost Children reveal more details.
Armistice....Mom, I'm home!
Name of Maker: Carlene Buck
Armistice....Mom, I'm home! - Figures in red (some injured or missing) stand in the open doorway to their home wanting a hug and welcome home. A larger figure (Mom) on the back offers them a hug and the chance to live again in peace until the next war comes. I began this quilt on Labor Day and finished it on Armistice Day less than 9 weeks later. In that same length of time soldiers complete basic training. I consider this a pro-peace, rather than anti-war, quilt.
Hearts Aplenty
Name of Maker: Shelley Shea
Hearts Aplenty - I saw this pattern and had to make it since I love hearts, and wanted to try my hand at a "rag" quilt. I shopped around for quite awhile to get the flannel on sale because this quilt requires 16 1/4 yards!
