We continue our selection of quilts exhibited in 2019 at the Houston International Quilt Festival as part of their 45th Anniversary, the Sapphire Anniversary. The Sapphire Celebration exhibit is described as:

"Quilters have long used the color blue to symbolize trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Sapphire is also the chosen gem to celebrate 45th anniversaries—which International Quilt Festival is doing this year (2019)! These new and antique blue and white quilts will be suspended from the ceiling in a spectacular and unforgettable display."

To be a part of the exhibit, quilts had to fit the following criteria:

  • Entries may be Traditional, Modern or Art.
  • Entries must have been made between 1974 and 2019.
  • The minimum size is 50” x 50”

Please enjoy the fiftieth quilt from the exhibition by Sherrilyn O. Phelps.

When we think of wholecloth quilts, we probably think of a single fabric that has been quilted all over to add beautiful detail. Jane Holihan's Summer Sonnet meets that definition, only it is considerably smaller than other wholecloth quilts. (See it compared to the other two quilts it's sitting between below) Featured at Houston 2017 in the Merit Quilting, Hand category, "this original design is hand-quilted and embellished with embroidery and tiny beads." Talk about taking advantage of the space you're given.

Summer Sonnet by Jane Holihan of Walworth, New York was featured in the Merit Quilting, Hand category at Houston 2017.

Doodle Bird 2 by Joanie Zeier Poole and Pam Levenhagen is the third quilt created by these two friends. Pam created the central panel from her original painting. Joanie assembled the top and brought it to life with her imaginative quilting designs, that fill each tiny space using hand-guided free-motion quilting on her domestic machine. Doodle Bird 2 won Second Place at AQS Lancaster 2015, Wall Quilts – 1st Entry.

Star Members can watch Joanie in Show 509: Machine Quilting Magic.

All the coloring on Cathy Franks' quilt, Space Age, was done with colored pencils. There is no piecing on this quilt. She also took up the challenge to use rulers when doing her quilting. Those are all radiating 4" circles.
