Mother's Day StoryShare 2019 is an annual initiative of the nonprofit Quilt Alliance to pay tribute to mothers while raising funds for quilt history. In this StoryShare, Bonnie Barbera pays tribute to her mother, Virginia Kelley Syracuse. All proceeds from this fundraiser will support the Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories oral history project.

Today, May 10, is the last day to submit your story. It's quick and easy.

Please consider honoring your mom (or anyone who has mothered you) with a Mother’s Day StoryShare tribute and a donation to the Quilt Alliance.

1. Contribute $20 or more in the name of your honoree on this secure Donate page.
2. Fill out this form to share your tribute story.
3. Email a photo of your mom (or mother figure) to information@quiltalliance.org with StoryShare in the subject line.

They will notify you when the tribute has been posted. Feel good about letting your mom know how much you care, and for supporting the Quilt Alliance’s mission to document, preserve, and share the rich history of quilts and their makers!

They are accepting submissions now through May 10 and will be sharing these photos and memories on the Quilt Alliance blog and social media from May 6-12 as they are received.

Alex is super excited to use her National Park Pass. Can you guess where she is? It's Yosemite. After looking at her design wall, we think she needs some inspiration!

By the way, if you have Netflix,  "The Dawn Wall" is an very interesting and well done movie about an amazing ascent of one of the famous rock walls at Yosemite.

Water - it's everywhere! The majority of the Earth's surface is covered by water. More than half of the human body consists of water. Every living thing depends on water to survive, and life hangs in the balance when this precious resource is squandered. Offering a variety of artistic interpretations, H2Oh! draws on a well of beauty, reverence, and contemplation as it invites viewers to consider the importance and the impact of water, one of the most vital, desired, powerful, sacred, and enjoyed resources on Earth.

It wasn't all about traditional quilts at Quiltfest Lancaster 2019. Take a look at the 1st Place winner in the Mid-Century Modernism category. It's Squaring the Circles by Erin Andrews.

This photo of the quilt was taken when it was on exhibit at QuiltCon 2019 by Sarah at saroy.net. If you click over to Sarah's blog, you'll see a whole slew of other Modern Quilts.

I know that I have talked all about Sashiko...kinda like a broken record. But truly it is the most relaxing stitch project because you only have to bring along your stitch canvas, a Sashiko needle and a skein of Sashiko thread. I love it for a car project. One of my favorite Sashiko designers is Sylvia Pippen, formerly of Hawaii and now currently in Washington State. She has a brick and mortar shop in La Conner, Washington. Both my girlfriend and I signed up for her latest BOM (Block Of the Month) which was called Flight.

The wonderful thing about this particular project is...it is double the fun...or rather, triple the fun because it combines my other favorites. Wool appliqué and needle turn appliqué. But...full disclosure, I haven't started mine but my bestie has been keeping up (yeah...we all have one friend like that, lol) After visiting her and seeing the progress with her blocks I know I have to get going on this project because it is spectacular! Although her blocks are not totally finished, you get the idea of what they will ultimately look like. I love the marbleized cotton fabric included in this BOM. Be sure to check out Sylvia's webpage and prepared to be WOW'd!

(Apologies to Sylvia, there is a typo regarding her name in the slideshow.)

After a devastating fire in Colorado, Ricky asked for help to re-forest the area. So many people were quick to respond and now the trees have arrived.

Ricky writes,

The trees are here! So many of you contributed to the tree fund! Thank you. We have 1700 trees of various varieties. Mostly the same kinds that burned. Tree planting starts May 22 - June 5. We will help Mother Nature recover from the fire.

This sewing project from Melissa Mortenson of the Polka Dot Chair is specifically designed for kids & teens to practice their pressing, cutting, straight stitching & pivoting skills. Anyone who sews will know that all of those things are important to master before moving on to more involved sewing projects. It's a great way for kids to use their own design skills and to keep them occupied on those hot summer days.

From R & A Collaborations:

Amanda Cobbett trained as a printed textile designer at UAL Chelsea. Her love of mark making techniques, which have evolved from paper into stitch, are the basis from which each piece of work is created. This combined with colour, intricacy and composition all play their part in the creative process.

From her studio in the Surrey Hills, Amanda makes papier mâché and machine embroidered artworks inspired by nature in all its forms.

Once in while there is a quilt that just takes our breath away and this time it was Colourful Retina by Sugy Kim of Australia. We were speechless when we saw it, but now we can apply words such as Gobsmacked...Stunned...Mind Blown. From the millions of perfect points, to the fabric matching and brilliant design, we are still trying to catch our breath.

Sugy's quilt was on display in the Hand Quilted Quilts category of AQS QuiltWeek Spring Paducah 2019. It measures 87" x 87" and was hand quilted.

Quilting Techniques:
Applipieced, fused appliqué, hand appliqué, bias work, freestyle piecing, foundation piecing, hand piecing, paper piecing, machine piecing, piped edging.

We loved the 2nd Place quilt "Spat" and the 3rd Place Quilt "Abbey's Flower Garden".....and now for the 1st Place quilt in the category Small Wall Quilts- 1st Entry in an AQS Paducah Contest. This quilt is not small at 83" x 83" but this makes it even more impressive as it was Hand Appliqued, Hand Pieced, and Hand Quilted. This quilt exhibits amazing artistry by Taeko. The incredible number of red triangles and the beautiful applique. BUT what surprised us was that the background that we thought was a solid nuetral...is not solid at all. Take a look at the close ups.

Did you miss 2nd & 3rd Place?
