Both. I have bins with certain colors and "piles" of everything in the living room, bedroom, and sewing room!!!!

I store my fabric in small plastic baskets by color, but not necessarily by tone or shade. A rainy-day project for sure.

When I downsized from my home with a basement quilting room, my daughter-in-law offered me half of her basement for my stash and cutting table - I also manage to have a sewing room in my 2 bedroom apt which I have stocked top to bottom with fabric. My greatest pleasure was when my two granddaughters, ages 12 and 16, came and shopped in my stash and I bought each of them a new sewing/embroide ry machine. I've passed the torch!!!! Love the Alex Anderson tutorials and love my fellow quilters.

I'm half and half - sorted by projects but not color - want so much for a storage closet to get rid of bins.... space and price right now is a problem. I do so many different types of sewing it's hard.

I wrap my fabric on comic book boards and store it in IKEA Billy bookcases with doors to keep light and dust out. I have arranged by color and theme. I love that I can find what I need quickly.

Once my DIL organized my fabrics for me and I couldn't find anything.

I HAVE to have my fabric organized or it makes me crazy. If less than 1/2 yard, it goes in a scrap bin. I have multiple bins, organized by color.
]f it's over a yard, it get's wrapped around a piece of cardboard and stored on shelving by color group.

My fabric is all organized and put in it's place so I can grab it and go because I know where it is.

I'm both. But when things get organized and put away, or projects put into storage bins, it is the kiss of death. Out of sight, out of mind. Move on to something new -- which means "fabric shopping!!!"

question/option s are confusing. I have fabric sorted by colours on my shelves, but would not call myself 'organized', as my sewing stuff is scattered around the house! incl fabric! The stuff I'm going to work on, the stuff I am currently working on, the stuff I worked on last, and even stuff from 2 or 3 projects ago! NOT organized... but the stuff that is on the shelf is nicely colour-coordina ted for easy-to-find.
