The root cellar is an abstraction of a picture I took of a root cellar in New Foundland, Canada.
The pattern for this quilt was made by tracing a photo of caladiums in my flower bed onto white fabric. The veins were made by heavily quilting the leaves. Then the unit was cut out and appliqued to the black background. An extra layer of batting was added behind the leaves before the final quilting.
This quilt was made for a friend to use as a cover for her Mah Jongg table. She has a beautiful vintage set with cherry red accessories that she wanted to match. Because the game table is small, and tiles remain face up during play, the center design element needed to be limited - and everything needed to be very secure to withstand the mixing and passing of tiles. Those of you who play will recognize The Wall in the beige embroidered fabric, the racks in the outer strip sets, and flowers being passed during the Charleston in the corners. This was a wonderful project to design and quilt - I hope it brings her much luck at the table!

I have always admired the patience and stillness that Great Blue Heron's use when hunting. This is a two sided quilt of the heron, done in a class with Barbara Shapell. You sandwich the quilt first then thread paint with your top and bobbin thread at the same time. Your tension has to be good on both sides. Barb's knowledge of threads and needles was a great help. I also enjoyed using the Hemingsworth trilobal polyester thread. It gives a beautiful sheen.
This quilt was made for a friend in memory of our childhood and her mother. We would spent many happy hours climbing the birch trees in her back yard and swaying in the breeze. Her mother always supported our wild escapades, including building a tree fort high up in the branches. Can you see the steps we nailed in the tree to get started on our climb? We share strong roots.
This quilt was a guild challenge for our 2015 show. It had to be 24" sq., have a traditional block in it somewhere, have no black or white, and be made from only two colours chosen randomly out a paper bag. We could use any tint or shade of those colours. It was a very good lessson in using the colour wheel. I was also exploring how to get depth and movement in my art.
My first ever written pattern from my own design. This quilt took only three days to piece but serve real weeks to write the pattern . That was so much harder to do !
My first attempt at a whole cloth quilt. I used the skill builders panel I received as a gift with my renewal to TQS this year. I added some hot fix crystals and love how it turned out.
