Grandmother's Flower Garden - This is a king sized grandmother's flower garden which I hand pieced about 10 years ago. I began hand quilting, but its overwhelming size and problems with my hands and elbow caused me to discontinue my work. My friend asked to finish it. It took her 2 years.
The quilt is a traditional setting with an original border design. Each flower has a pale yellow center and is surrounded by green 'leaves.' Each unit is then surrounded by a white path which is quilted with 3 stones in each hexagon and it all is joined together with orange diamonds and triangles. The quilt top is appliqued to the solid white borders, which then had the flowers and diamonds appliqued to them. I wanted prairie points on the binding, but facing up. However, the angles were wrong, so after I got it back from the quilter, I also appliqued the diamonds around the edges, and finished by scalloping the corners.
It received a first place and a Best in Category in the Omaha Quilt Guild Show, 2011.
