"Afternoon Delight" was one of Sue Garman's favorite patterns. This wonderfully scrappy quilt is truly a delight to make with its combination of simple appliqué and Double Nine-Patch blocks and modified Shoo Fly blocks. Each month you will work on pieced and appliquéd blocks, and in the final month, you will assemble the blocks and add the outer border. The finished quilt measures approximately 86 1/2" inches square.

Let's use this Topic "Afernoon Delight Show and Tell" as a place to show off your beautiful blocks. That way, you know where to come to see what everyone is doing.

The topics that apply to each month are a good place to ask questions or make suggestions for each block.

AND when you post your photos to Social Media, like Instagram, Facebook, etc., use either of these hash tags so everyone there will be able to find our wonderful work:

Chrys, your blocks are beautifully executed--especially the Twirly Ball!

May applique blocks are completed. The twirly ball block has always been the trickiest for me, but it certainly is a pretty block design from Sue Garman!

That’s a very thoughtful way of attacking that block. Thanks for sharing

I've seen several people mention that they don't like the swirly block. I find those a lot of fun. If you're struggling with construction, there are several cues within the block that make them a bit easier. I cut a circle from one of the two fabrics in the swirl, then make the little swirl pieces out of the second color. The outer wheel has spikes on it. The corners of the swirl pieces are at the spot where the outer wheel's points touch the circle. So it's easy to glue them down in just the right place. Once you have that edge lined up, you can cover the inner spot with a circle and you don't even have to turn under that edge, just leave it under the circle. On this pink and yellow one, I used a large yellow circle, put the pink and white swirl pieces on top, then put the ring of pink in the middle, letting the yellow of the bottom circle show through.

terrils - I like the block you substituted for the Twirly Ball. I had trouble with the Twirly Ball the first time around and ended up making a second one so I was going to substitute a wreath with 4 hearts, one for each of my grandchildren. I got almost finished appliqueing the hearts and remembered that the blocks would be on point which means my hearts would be on their sides. I started to unsew the hearts but looked back at my spare Twirly Ball and told myself it wasn't that bad so I have 2 Twirly Ball Blocks and a story to tell.

May 29th and May blocks done! Instead of another Twirly Ball, I modified the Rose Chain block from Faye Labanaris Applique Rose Garden book. Thank you HelenW and Barbara Black for idea and encouragement! Stay well!!

HelenW - It's embroidery and I think it is the outline or back stitch. I really like the way it gives it a finished work and hides my mistakes. There are some really great blocks and fabric choices being posted.

Yay,finished May! And this is my wall, the bottom ones I made with the cutouts since I used squares of fused fabric after I traced the design. Since we already made the June blocks, may I suggest, if anyone in charge reads this, that you release the month 11a applique blocks. We have time now that we will not in November, just an idea. Loving everyones posts!

Sandytn, Love the black outline stitching. It really ties them all together. What kind of stitching is it? HelenW

I love the fussy cutting in the upper left! It looks like that fabric was made for that block!

I finished the May blocks last weekend. I was looking forward to new blocks in June and then remembered we already made them. Looks like June I'll be making more of the nine-patch blocks and working on more UFO's.

Hi Everyone:

I hope you are all well. I finally finished my May Applique blocks. I'm all caught up now through June. I'm moving on to more double nine patch blocks and masks. Can't wait to do the July Applique blocks

Beth
