Join us for a new series we are calling "Stash Buster". Over the next few months we will share creative ideas for slimming down your fabric scraps. And remember, the more scraps you get rid of, the more room there is for new fabric!!
Occasionally, every quilter needs to purge his or her ever-growing fabric stash. Why not view the chore as an opportunity to make a stunning summer tablecloth or fun couch throw using all those random scraps you've accumulated? We found this quick-and-easy Hourglass Block tutorial on Red Pepper Quilts to get you going.
Have you always thought you had what it takes to design a winning quilt? Here's your chance! The National Quilting Association is having a contest to design the official 2014 National Quilting Day Quilt.
The NQD quilt should be large enough to be used as a donation quilt. It should be a simple design that could be completed easily by a quilter with any level of experience or by several members of a quilting group, who may have different levels of expertise.
In addition to having the quilt design published and featured as the 2014 National Quilting Day Quilt with full credits, the winner of the contest will receive a complimentary two-year membership to NQA and a 3-day admission pass to the NQA 2014 Annual Quilt Show.
The deadline for submission is July 1, 2013. Click here for more information.

Gaven was created by Charlotte Warr Andersen in 1990. Gaven means "the gift" in Danish. Charlotte made the quilt for a competition held in Denmark and it was the Grand Prize Winner of the 1990 Kjeldsen's Fairy Tale Contest. As one of the top three winners, Gaven was printed on the lid of butter cookie tins.

Alex was lucky enough to have two quilt shows in her neighborhood recently. It's always wonderful to see the local talent and these shows were no exception. First up is the Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association 2013 Shower of Stars Quilt Show held at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The SCVQA was the first of its kind founded in Northern California in 1975. SCVQA is named a "quilt association" to emphasize the inclusion of all interested in and supportive of quilts and quilting.

Here is the winner of First Place Wall Quilts - Home Machine Quilted- from AQS Lancaster 2013 - Flourish on the Vine by Kathy K. Wylie has stunning applique and stunning machine quilting. That's definitely a winning combination. It measures 62" x 73" and features needle-turn applique, hand and machine embroidery, cut-away trapunto, domestic machine quilting and don't miss the decorative binding treatment.
Flourish on the Vine was also the Winner of the 2011 Founders Award at the International Quilt Association show in Houston.
This quilt was inspired by the words of John 15:5:
I am the vine; you are the branches.
If you remain in Me and I in you,
you will bear much fruit;
apart from Me you can do nothing.

The National Quilting Association needs your help. They need more quilts for their 2013 Show being held in Columbus, Ohio on June 27-29. The great thing about the NQA Quilt Show is anyone is eligible to enter whether you are a professional quilter or beginning quilter.
The thought of having your quilt judged may be a scary proposition. But a Judges' comments are both positive and constructive. Knowing what you do well inspires you to be more creative and knowing where there is room for improvement will direct you to specific classes and books.
Right now they have 200 quilts entered for their 2013 Show. They want to hit their usual limit of 400 entries. That's why THEY NEED YOUR HELP. Enter your quilts by going to http://nqaquiltshow.org/Show and follow the directions for completing the form. Entry forms must be postmarked by May 10, 2013. Even though your quilt may not be completely finished, you can still enter now because you have until mid-June before you will need to ship it to Columbus.
And if you can, please join them in June to Celebrate America at their 44th Annual Quilt Show. Meet your friends, attend classes, walk the show, shop the vendor mall, and stop by the NQA booth to say hello.
Here's another beauty from the Lancaster AQS show. It is Purple Grace from Karen Kielmeyer (TQS member kkiel). This quilt also won First place in Machine Embroidery at the Machine Quilters Showcase in Overland Park, KS.
Karen had a problem with her quilt, but in true quilter fashion, she solved it and made something beautiful. Here's what she had to say.
