The quilt world gained a valuable asset when Grace Errea made the transition from high-level corporate executive to full-time textile artist, designer, author, and teacher.

After sharing striking examples of her "value based" contemporary-realistic work, Grace shows and explains an eight-value fabric chart, oversees an impromptu workshop involving the studio audience, and reveals the materials and methods she uses to create and build the patterns for her quilts.

PLUS watch her famous gluing technique.

All this, plus Alex demos a lightweight, snuggly receiving blanket that features the surprising combination of flannel and voile.

The episode debuts on July 29, 2013.

Kristi challenged herself to make this quilt and it paid off. Awaken Spring won 2nd Place, Traditional, Wall, Applique at Road to California 2013.

Here's her Artist's Statement: Awaken, Spring began the same way they all do, "you can't make that." I needed to prove I could. I could make it better, stronger, faster. I designed and rearranged much of this quilt to make it as original as i could. I hope y'all enjoy my version of reveille for Spring.

The Quilt Life has a challenge for you!  They want you to submit your quilted interpretation of Grant Wood's classic painting, American Gothic. This quilt is one of the most familiar images in 20th-century art and probably one of the most parodied in pop culture and now it's your turn to create a masterpiece.

And here's the best part, selected quilts will be featured in an upcoming issue of The Quilt Life!

Here are a few details to get you started.  There will be more to follow.

  • The piece can be any size, but must be completed - no tops or unbound entries accepted.
  • One entry per person.
  • The piece can be a quilt you have already created.
  • The piece must be recognizable as a twist on the American Gothic painting.  It can even be a reproduction of the original.
  • Submission images (under 10MB in either .jpg or.jpeg format) should be sent here
  • Deadline for entry is September 30, 2013.

Deadline for entry is September 30, 2013.

If you search the web, you'll find many different "takes" on Grant Wood's image. Captain John's thought was to pay homage to our new way of life ...with apologies to Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Google.  (No, John can't enter.  So what's your idea to win?)

And now for something real, here's one from Luke Haynes which he made from old clothes.  Let your imagination run wild!

You'll find the magic of embroidered faeries in Judith Woodworth's whimsical quilt. This quilt was the winner of 2nd Place: Innovative, Wall, Pieced, Road to California 2013.

Artist's Statement:

I wanted to create a star where my fairies could live with windows into the real world. It has embroidered fairies that sprinkle fairy dust to grant wishes. The curved piecing star weaves over and under the star points. I used Legacy 80/20 batting plus wool batting, and mostly Glide thread.

You can watch Judy work magic on her Gammill in Episode 609: Freeform Feathers and Happy Endings where she creates freefrom, out-of-the-box feathers and encourages Alex to do the same.
