Created during a weeklong workshop with Rosalie Dace (Show 711) and featuring all fused strips, no prints, Tara Faughnan's Strip Quilt is a fusible wonder that you can barely even tell is fused together. But by the time Tara came home after the workshop to put the quilt together, she had forgotten how to use the fusible and needed to relearn the process.

Learn from Tara in Show 2709.

We continue our selection of quilts exhibited in 2019 at the Houston International Quilt Festival as part of their 45th Anniversary, the Sapphire Anniversary. The Sapphire Celebration exhibit is described as:

"Quilters have long used the color blue to symbolize trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Sapphire is also the chosen gem to celebrate 45th anniversaries—which International Quilt Festival is doing this year (2019)! These new and antique blue and white quilts will be suspended from the ceiling in a spectacular and unforgettable display."

To be a part of the exhibit, quilts had to fit the following criteria:

  • Entries may be Traditional, Modern or Art.
  • Entries must have been made between 1974 and 2019.
  • The minimum size is 50” x 50”

Please enjoy the thirty-sixth quilt from the exhibition by an Unknown Maker.

Multi-Colored madness controlled, Annemieke Lof wanted the colors of Colorful Circles to run free but still be balanced. Featuring both batiks and Kaffe Fassett spot fabrics, "the middle block contains the colors that are repeated in the other blocks," bringing the uniformity that Annemieke was searching for.

Colorful Circles by Annemieke Lof, quilted by Elly Prins, of Almere, The Netherlands was featured in the A Celebration of Color category at Houston 2018.

From San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles:

"Join us for an exciting conversation with two influential creatives, textile artist Kaffe Fassett and painter Erin Lee Gafill, as they discuss the inspiration behind their recent publication Color Duets, a visual memoir chronicling Erin's decade-long collaboration with her uncle Kaffe. Two artists a generation apart talk about their shared childhood influences growing up at Nepenthe, in Big Sur, California, the deep satisfaction they get from working with their hands, be it painting, knitting, needlepoint or sewing, and the extraordinary role color plays in their designs, and in their lives."

Presented by the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, the Kaffe Fassett and Erin Lee Gafill: A Creative Conversation Webinar will be held on October 28, 2020 at 11 AM Pacific / 2 PM Eastern. Click the photo below to register for the Webinar and to get more details.

If you watched Stitched, the Film, then you'll know what it's like to submit an entry into the Houston International Quilt Festival. This is the very first Best of Show winner (1980). It is Royal Palm by Laverne Mathews. It is a traditional Hawaiian quilt. Her design source was folded paper cut designs. It was hand appliquéd and quilted.

Laverne was an art teacher who loved traditional quilts. Click here to see another one of her beauties.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to bring a quilt from conception to reality? Well, fiber artist Leslie Gabriëlse has made a video showing just how he does that. He traces his quilt Ocean Life (48" x 96") from its beginning sketches all the way to the finished product utiltizing fabric and acrylic paint. Leslie is a celebrated aritst whose work, Picnic 4, won the De Voogt Prize 2020. Sit back, relax, and watch in amazement as an artist brings his creation to life.

Sometimes quilting can be very therapeutic. For Mimi Ghauri-Young, she used the process of making her quilt Finding Balance to help her work through some challenges in life. Balanced itself with its central mandala design, and containing machine quiltingmachine piecing, and appliqué, this quilt helps push forward the thought that quilting is sometimes more than just a hobby.

Finding Balance by Mimi Ghauri-Young of Yountville, California was featured in the Appliqué, Small category at Houston 2018.
