Kathy McNeil's (Show 1802Celtic Fox "symbolizes a need to think quickly, to employ cleverness and wisdom." The cunningness of the fox, which "comes from "kenning" meaning to know and understand" is represented beautifully in Kathy's hand appliqué and machine embroidery. Winning First Place in the Art-Whimsical category at Houston 2017, this is one dashing fox.

It's time for fun. Pick things about yourself and get them represented on your project. Work on the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears. The hair can be really fun. No judgment here. Try something out and then change it. This is play. You remember "play", right?

Join Alex LIVE on Wednesday November 11, 2020 @ 10am PST, 1pm EST, and 6pm London time. All classes are recorded so they can be viewed later.

Our latest show doesn't just have the Exaggerated Pointillism stylings of Carol Morrissey, it also has a fabulous visit to the A Better World Exhibition featured at Houston in 2019. Co-curated by The Quilt Show mainstays Lyric Kinard (Show 2013) and Susan Brubaker Knapp (Show 901), The exhibit focused on inspiration and what people have done with their actions to make the world a better place. The exhibit featured a quilt by Alex titled Anchors Aweigh, made in tribute to her father Joe Sladky. Below is what Alex has to say about the quilt and the exhibit:

"I'm beyond thrilled that my art work has been accepted into "A Better World", an art quilt exhibit highlighting heroes in our world who have worked for the greater good. I chose my Dad, Joe Sladky.

You won’t find a monument with his name on Main Street, or a statue in the town square, but he’s a hero nonetheless. How else to describe a man who spent much of his 94 years in service to others, in ways both large and small? A lifetime sailor, he served his country honorably and proudly as a Navy Lt JG during World War II, eventually settling his young family in Northern California. There, his dedicated commitment to giving—often quietly, behind the scenes—helped to build his small town’s educational, medical, and humanitarian communities. From serving on the school board to playing Santa at the local Senior Center, he was always ready with a hand and a smile. His philosophy was simple: to provide a solid secure mooring; to teach, support and encourage; and then—when the moment was right—to let go for a smooth sail, guided by the stars.

A hero? Yes. But also an outstanding citizen, friend, husband, father . . .
my father:
Joseph F. Sladky (July 19, 1923 – August 12, 2017)"

Alex began the eagle on this quilt, Made in America, in a Charlotte Warr Andersen class at Asilomar. She wanted to do the eagle rather than the face of a person. She didn't finish it until a few years later when the concept for the design came into focus. (Unfortunately, no pattern is available.)

Star Members can watch Charlotte Warr Andersen in Show 1209: A "Roundup" of Techniques from Two Terrific Teachers, which also features Georgia Bonesteel.

Susan Garrity's Moons Over Bars was part of the AQS Modern Quilt Challenge. It was exhibited at AQS QuiltWeek in Phoenix and traveled for a year as part of the AQS Modern Quilt Challenge exhibit. It's wonderful how the quilting replicates the patterns of the piecing and appliqué parts.
