Today we head up to Portland to participate in the International Quilt Market! I am very anxious to attend and maybe understand what is occurring in my world of quilting. I have been a passionate consumer of the quilting industry which has provided so many hours of enjoyment and friendships. As with all aspects of life, there is a wax and wane and I am going to gather information and share what I can...so we can all keep this activity that brings so much joy, healthy! There are more shops closing than opening...As in Star Wars...there is a shift in the Force...and I want to understand why! I can't wait to share with you what's new and what to look forward too so we can support that local brick and mortar quilt shops. Between the Woolie Mammoth Blog, Quilt Roadies and Anna & G On The Road we will bring you all the latest and what you can look forward to! To give you a full spectrum look, I will be working in different aspects. G and I will be videoing market for Quilt Roadies, interviewing industry professionals for The Quilt Show, and working one day in the Buttermilk Basin booth! I am hoping to see first hand what is happening in the quilt world...wish us luck!

Just so you have a little background...The International Quilt Market is an industry wholesale trade show which was founded by Karey Bresenhan in 1979 as a place where buyers and industry professionals could gather to showcase their products and learn from each other. It occurs twice a year with Fall Market always held in Houston, TX and Spring Market rotating. This year Spring Market is in Portland! There will be more than a 1,000 booths with new and familiar fabrics, books, patterns, machines, notions and supplies. Classes are held to help with professional development from marketing to creating a healthy shop enviroment. One evening there is Sample Spree where fabric companies, designers and publishers sells samples of their latest designs and patterns. All things quilts in one Convention Center is going to be so exciting to share with you next week...so stay tuned!

The Group Quilt Category was very competitive at Spring Paducah 2018. The first place quilt was "Ice Fishing Village" (68"x45") by the Canadian group, Les Amies du Quilt. Take a look at the details in the quilt. They must have had National Tryouts to get into the group. Fantastic work.

"Ice Fishing Village" also won the OLFA Viewers’ Choice Award.

We stopped for awhile in front of Hiroko Nakayama's quilt "Mariage" (French for "Wedding"). First we admired all the points in the quilt. Then we realized how many triangles that took. Then we realized that there was hand work in the black triangles. Then we realized how she angled the straight line quilting. Then we realized how she worked the spikes in the corners. Then we realized we weren't getting enough pictures of other quilts and moved on. You, however, can linger here as long as you need.

Christina Williams of JustCallMeChris has a really cute and easy project. Let's just call them "button top bobby pins." You might see them online for $2.50 each. Christina shows you how to make them for about $.25.

Stephen Towns: Rumination and a Reckoning is currently at the Baltimore Museum of Art through September 2, 2018. While trained as a painter, Towns also became a self-taught quilter. At the center of the exhibition is the monumental installation of Birth of a Nation, which represents a black woman nursing a white infant against the backdrop of the first official flag of the United States. This quilt is over 7-1/2 feet tall.

This is a quilt that succeeds by leaving you with the question, "What is fabric and what is painted?". We wish we had more time to see "Lakeside Reverie" (44" x 63") by Hallie O'Kelley up close. The techniques list are "Hand Quilted, Hand Dyeing, Fabric Painting, and Machine Piecing". Appliqué did not appear on the list. So what is painted and what is the fabric?

We love the movement, the use of squares and the modern feel of the border. Now it's time for you to see if you can tell...

Katie's quilt was inspired by fall leaves and strawberry plants. Would you have guessed that?
