Sometimes it pays to comment - keep reading.

Ricky here. Twas I that created the "Caption This" blog with Moonshine Man. What great creative minds you have - so once again, I won't listen to you when you say, "I'm not creative!" Yes you are!

For quilt patterns, the clear favorite was Drunkard's Path, but some other creative answers were: Country Cousins, Delectable Mountains, and Streak of Lightning. They were all great! Thanks for your fun comments.

My favorite caption was by suzmax, "I'm gonna wash my hair right out of that man!"

Next, for creativity, I liked Wren1010's caption and block choice: Lets all do our best George Jones imitation and sing:
Well in North Carolina, way back in the hills
Me and my old pappy had a hand in a still
We brewed white lightnin' 'til the sun went down
Then he'd fill him a jug and he'd pass it around
Mighty, mighty pleasin, pappy's corn squeezin' Whshhhoooh . . . white lightnin'..."

She said, "Looks like Justin tipped (tippled) that jug one too many times! And the quilt would be "Streak of Lightning."

But the mystery person was guessed by only two people - It's Jeff. Some of you may say, "Jeff Who?" Jeff who is our Best Boy (for lack of a better title), Needs-a-date Jeff, Jeff who played didgeridoo and sang in the Christmas Concert (Dec, 25, 2008 blog post). Jeff works full time for Ricky Tims Inc, but migrates over to ARJJ from time to time.

One person had the total package: caption, correct answer, and a quilt suggestion. So, the 1st place winner of my "Caption This" contest with Moonshine Man Jeff is florence, because she not only got Jeff correct, but she had a VERY creative caption and quilt block choice: I'll say it's Jeff. Caption: "Who? Me? Someone wants a date? I need some liquid courage! Quilt: Old Maid's Puzzle!!"

Thanks for playing. I'm sending a bag of Ricky Tims' hand-dyed scraps to suzmax, Wren1010 and Florence - It pays to comment!!!

You never know when a blog will become a secret contest. Did anyone notice the "pipe" was a spoon and a spool of thread?

Boogie down!

According to my brief research on the web there are three spellings for playing hookie (hooky, hookey). Yesterday I shut the office lights off at 2pm and headed 90 miles to the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge to see the migration of the fabulous Sandhill Cranes. The full story is too long to tell here, but I'll try to hit the highlights. I've lived here for 5 years and this was my first effort to go see them. I had no idea how to find them or what to expect. My web research said they would be at the Alamosa Wildlife Refuge and the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge - and that this should be peak time.

1. I first stopped at the Alamosa refuge. I was the ONLY car there - no birds - no wildlife - hmmm. So I took a photo of the only thing that was abundant - cattails splitting open.

2. Since I was only 30 minutes from the other refuge I decided to bite the bullet and driver further. Once there, I looked and looked and finally saw two cranes. - big woo. - actually it was a big woo, but they were too far away for a good photo. Nonetheless, I took that photo in case I never saw more.

3. On my last ditch effort I pulled into the last view point. To my amazement there they were - about 20,000 of them. The information placard indicated that almost all of the Rocky Mountain migrating cranes stop here for about six weeks twice a year.

4. I took 1100 photos. It was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

Capt'n John and his brother Jim took Mom to Spring Training to see her beloved Angels baseball team. While there we went to see the plants of the Desert at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. As some of our members noted last week, we were surprised to find that Chihuly had spread his glass throughout the Garden.

Not only were we surprised by the glass, but the shapes, variety and flowers of the desert plants were fascinating. If you get a chance to see this in person, the show can be seen during the day and lit up at night. The exhibit is through May 31, 2009. It's worth the trip.

Like quilts displayed outside, it brings a whole new perspective to the art. Ricky plays "If I Were Love" from his Heart and Soul CD.
