To create the look of optical art in a Mariner's Compass, Peter Hayward added 3D effects to his very small quilt, Steering By The Stars, by "using a technique of interwoven strips of fused fabric." With machine quilting, fused appliqué, and weaving, there is a different visual sensation every place you look.

Steering By The Stars by Peter Hayward of Javea, Alicante, Spain was featured in the Appliqué, Small category at Houston 2018.

Which Kind of Quilter are you? Vote below.

Last week we asked how you stored your stash. This week we want to know how you design your quilts. Which kind of quilter are you? Are you a multi-project person (or UFO creator)? OR, do you finish one project at a time and move on to the next one?

Beautifully hand-quilted and wonderfully pieced by Kat Bowser's grandmother Edna, this Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt was made in the 1920s or 1930s and is a treasured keepsake that Kat stores in her home cedar chest. For being close to a hundred years old, it is in beautiful condition.

TQS continues its feature of quilts exhibited in 2020 at QuiltCon as part of The Quilts of Victoria Findlay Wolfe exhibit. The exhibit is described as:

"Purposeful play is a deliberate free-form practice with one goal in mind: to ultimately improve the outcome of the finished product while capturing a thought, emotion, or technique. Always fascinated by color, pattern, and quilters who came before us, Victoria Findlay Wolfe found her life's true joy in exploring her grandmother's quiltmaking as a starting point.

Her diverse and exciting body of work stirs quilters worldwide to dig deeper, take risks, and experiment with fabric. This retrospective exhibit features a selection of Findlay Wolfe's inspiring quilts and the stories behind them."

Please enjoy Victoria's third quilt from the exhibition.

"Inspired by the endless variety of Lichen, a tough little family of plants that can grow even on bare rocks in the desert," Betty Busby (Show 2202) created her Lichen quilt using a mixture of machine appliqué, fusing, and painting. Marvel in the craftsmanship of the piece and it's use of silk and non-woven materials.

Lichen by Betty Busby of Albuquerque, New Mexico was featured in the Art-Abstract, Large category at Houston 2017.

Robbi Joy Eklow brings together spirals, gears and amazing quilting in this stunning quilt. Robbi (Show 1008) put this aside for several years after dying all the fabric and then brought it out and finally finished it. Enjoy It's About Time (70" x 70").

While he considers himself a contemporary quilter and an art quilter, Ricky Tims had to learn the ropes just like everybody else. Ricky's First Quilt was a sampler that taught him techniques that he is still using today. Each block brought new knowledge that helped him get to where he is now, as co-host of The Quilt Show!
