iPad Problem Update

Here is the response from Vimeo our Video Hosting Company:

"I have some news regarding this issue. After some extensive testing, we were finally able to replicate this behavior using an Ipad mini. The word "music" is deriving from your Closed Caption file, but there definitely seems to be a bug on our end that is causing this strange behavior.

I have passed this information along to our developers, who will take a closer look and try to determine the cause of the problem. I will provide updates as soon as possible.

Check Out The Details on this Quilt by Marilyn Smith

Marilyn Smith of Columbia, Missouri, USA created the quilt Carolina, 84" x 94". It was accepted into AQS Paducah 2017. This is one of those quilts you have to linger on for awhile to understand the work involved. We love the border and the extra details throughout the quilt. It's interesting how she scalloped two of the edges. See how the quilting is such an important part of the design. The techniques include Beading, Bias Work, Hand Embroidery, Free-Motion Quilting, Machine Piecing, and Piped Edging.

It's Made Out of What? - Lucy Sparrow's All-Felt Convenience Store

You can buy just about anything in NYC. This summer you could find something really different at Lucy Sparrow's convenience store slash art installation. It featured 9,000 items made entirely of FELT. Click on Learn More for information regarding the exhibit and more photos.

Was the Baltimore Album Quilt Started as a Practical Joke?

This is our guess as to how the Baltimore Album Quilt got started. It's only a guess:

1846--

Quilt Guild Member #1 - "Hey, Darlene is new in our group. Let's trick her. No not the Snipe thing, let's do a quilting thing. Let's tell her she has to do a special quilt."

Member #2 - "We live near Baltimore. Let's call it a Baltimore Album Quilt."

Member #3 - "Let's say it has at least 200 flowers and all the vines around the outside."

Member #1 - "Yes, of course flowers have to have vases. Then there are 16 blocks in the middle with 100-175 appliqued pieces in each block."

Member #2 - "Oh, and birds. There have to be a lot of birds."

Member #3 - "And at least one of the birds has to be holding a flag."

Member #1 - "Oh that is mean. And how about making it even worse? At least one block has to have a sailing ship with all the rigging."

Member #2 - "This is great. Then add 1000 half-square triangles. We need to remember to tell her next week that it was all a joke."

4 years later...

Member #1 - "Darlene says she brought her Baltimore Album Quilt for show and tell. Mary, didn't you tell her we were kidding?..."

Congratulations to Darlene Donohue on winning 3rd Place Wall Quilts - Movable Machine Quilted at AQS Paducah 2017 with her amazing quilt, "My Baltimore Journey" 86" x 86". No joke.

Anna & G on the Road: 7 Habits of a Highly Effective Quilter #4

Sometimes we are so focused on what is piled in the Old Bee Hive that we don't allow ourselves to look right or left. We don't want to visit quilt shops for fear of seeing something that inspires us or gets us excited. But, I am here to tell you that sometimes the inspiration and excitement actually will spill over from what you are seeing and the diversion may cause a re-ignition of your passion.

The recent Eclipse was one of those moments that caused an excitement and passion in all kinds of artists. So when I had my two day visit at the next season taping of The Quilt Show (check out the 2 part video on Quilt Roadies) seeing the video that Ricky Tims shared of the Eclipse Totality, I had to share with you the quilt I saw in the Prairie Pine Quilt Shop in Scottsbluff, NE.

The Prairie Pine Quilt Shop sponsored an Eclipse Quilt Contest. You will enjoy a video of the shop and all the entries in a future Quilt Roadies video but I had to show you this amazing quilt by self taught quilter, Milla Malchow!

The design is incredible! But, the thought and quilting that went into telling the whole story was amazing. The quilt represents 3 elements: history, mystery and magic. The skull is to represent the few buffalo that still live and the bear with the Devil's Tower is to pay tribute to the Native American legend of when the moon passed the sun....so much thought went into the message of this quilt. And then she quilted history into her design.

You could spend hours looking at all the details and stories that are told in this quilt. It made me realize what a gift Milla gave to me and other quilters who see her quilt...Such inspiration that I just want to get home and start creating!!!!...and so, #4...let yourself be inspired! Don't be afraid or avoid that inspiration because you don't want to add another thing to the list...the inspiration may be just the jump start you need!

Win Jean Ann Wright's Book!

In Show 1904, TQS visited the studio of Jean Ann Wright. Jean makes log cabin blocks look curvy. In 1904, she shows you how to use various sizes of fabric strips and finished blocks to create the illusion of curved designs.

Patti Sandage and Elle Smith created this wonderful quilt (did I mention it's RED!) Capricho, 79" x 79", and won 2nd Place in the Wall Quilts - Movable Machine Quilted at Paducah 2017.
