A request from the Las Vegas Modern Quilt Guild:

"Hello Quilters! The outpouring of love and support we have received is nothing short of incredible and we are overwhelmed with it.  We have been struggling to put together words for what has happened in Las Vegas and have decided to put together quilts!

There have been a ton of people reaching out asking how they can help so we have put together a quilt drive for #quiltsforvegas.  We are requesting completed quilts, quilt tops, blocks, binding, backing, batting and monetary donations (or anything else you can think of!) to our efforts.  Monetary donations will cover shipping, fabric, thread and other quilt costs; any leftover donations will be donated to the GoFundMe that has already been set up."

In doing that, we have been looking through our files and found these pictures from the very 1st Taping (10 years ago) of The Quilt Show. Our tapings started in Ricky's Gallery in La Veta.

This quilt by Ayako Takaku was a joy to stand in front of at AQS QuiltWeek Spring Paducah 2017. It is another quilt that would have won an award at any other gathering, but there were so many great quilts that it didn't win. Wind Garden is 78" x 78" and is Hand Quilted, Hand Emboidered, and Hand Appliquéd. The appliqué is fantastic and the quilting mixed with leaves and vines is beautiful. We loved the small bird at the bird house. See below.

"Gilding the Arbor" is another multiple award-winning quilt by Bethanne Nemesh. She writes,

"This silk dupioni quilt is an original design inspired by my love of wholecloth quilting, Asian silk embroidery and antique botanical prints. All the flora and fauna was free drawn on the quilt with chalk and refined with wash out pen before quilting. The design elements can be recognized in my garden photography, as well as images from gardening catalogues and Dover design books."

The Best of Show at QuiltWeek® – Des Moines, Iowa, 2017 comes from the state of Oregon. Roots and Branches by Christina McCann of Depoe Bay is a striking landscape art quilt. It was also awarded Havel's Sewing Judges' Recognition Award by Donna Wilder at QuiltWeek® – Fall Paducah 2017.

Fused Appliqué, Machine Appliqué, Free-Motion Quilting, and Machine Piecing are all used in this wonderful traditional quilt. Judy Wolff and Angela McCorkle created Paisley Park Feathered Star, 89" x 89," and it was accepted at AQS QuiltWeek Spring Paducah 2017. We love the pieced points, the flowing appliqué, and the use of a white fabric mixed with swirls of light brown to blend with the colors in the quilt. Are you a fan of Traditional Quilts? Here is a great example.

Angela quilted a group quilt using the Feathered Star that we featured in July and it won first place. Click here to see it:

Alex has a classroom for her Holiday Lights pattern where she gives you tips on making the quilt and handling those appliqué lights. While we don't have a pattern for the skirt, you could easily apply the appliqué to a pre-made design.

The one thing about the quilting world is you can just hop around like a crow spotting shiny objects...and, end up with a pile of stuff like a pack rat...having to move the piles around to make more space for more piles. I am blessed though to have a friend who is a true quilting inspiration. Which means I occasionally am inspired to finish something, lol. She actually has a method to her madness which results in finished projects! She never chooses easy quilts...they are all labor intensive. After watching her for a while I started to notice some key patterns:

1) She only makes what she loves.
2) She keeps a few things in visible project piles.
3) She never sits without stitching in her hand.
4) She stitches a little bit regularly on each of her current projects.
5) She always looks ahead and organizes what she needs when a new project is on the horizon.

The result is a breadth of work that is extraordinary! As a quilter I am inspired by those around me who seem to get things done without any shortcuts, lol. I hope you enjoy this slide show of the beautiful work by Linda Hespe as displayed at the QuiltWorks Gallery in Bend, Oregon!
