A new exhibit was unveiled at the Houston Quilt Festival this year highlighting "Rising Stars" in quilting. Alex caught up with one of those stars, Karlyn Bue Lohrenz, and learned from her what it was like to be chosen. They walked through the exhibit and talked about her quilts.

Gail writes about Climate Change, "A study in extremes: warm versus cool and gently curving versus jagged edginess. Climate change is neither gradual or calm, but can be quite violent as evidenced by the hurricanes and wildfires of 2017, four years following the completion of the quilt. Freezer paper foundation and curved seam piecing as well as hand embroidery. Longarm machine quilting by Kris Vierra."

It all started over 100 years ago with a soot stain. One of the villagers in the town of Zalipie, Poland, decided to hide the stain by painting a flower on the ceiling. It started a trend and in 1948 an annual painted cottage competition was begun to help recover from World War II. Now every surface in the village is covered with flowers.

Betty's quilt, Therapy, saw her through relationship difficulties, a flood, five surgeries, and two auto-immune diseases. Concentrating on the beauty of the materials and technique helped her to remember there is beauty in the world and this quilt reflects that beauty.

Festival of the Cranes #24 is a raffle quilt. Gail writes, "I have long had a passion for group quilts and began designing and coordinating group quilts since the mid 1980s. Every year, I design a new raffle quilt for Hawks Aloft that 12 of us gather in a retreat setting to stitch the quilt top, usually in one day. It’s my little Sweat Shop with mountains of fun and friendship."

Robbing Peter to Pay Paul
Laura not only wrote about her own pioneer childhood experiences, she devoted a whole novel to the ninth year of her future husband Almanzo Wilder as he grew up on a prosperous farm in Upstate New York. Young Almanzo learned at an early age to bargain for the value of his labor. After a liveryman paid two dollars per bale of good hay, he wondered why Almanzo settled on the price.
"Well," Almanzo said, "I asked two and a quarter because if I'd asked two, you wouldn't have paid but one seventy-five." The liveryman laughed, and said to Father, "That's a smart boy of yours." Father did not take the money for the hay; he let Almanzo take it and count it to make sure it was sixty dollars.

Scandinavian Hearts are part of an old tradition to make woven paper or felt hearts to fill with candies or nuts to hang on a Christmas tree. Charlotte decided to make hers from satin, but these can also be made from simple cotton or wool.
