It all started over 100 years ago with a soot stain. One of the villagers in the town of Zalipie, Poland, decided to hide the stain by painting a flower on the ceiling. It started a trend and in 1948 an annual painted cottage competition was begun to help recover from World War II. Now every surface in the village is covered with flowers.

Love that dog houses, barns, bee hives and chicken coops were painted along with everything else.

How beautiful, and a way to express hopes for the future after such devastation. Here in Texas, we have an area near Schulenberg where the Czech's settled and painted all of their very plain churches that are awe inspiring. And, I agree with booklady27, loads of applique patterns!!

Wow! A town filled with applique patterns! I'd go nuts if I lived there, trying to recreate them all in a quilt. :) What a charming town, must be a wonderful place to live within all those beautiful flowers.
