Yes, we run pretty fast taking pictures at quilt shows. Some quilts make us stop and say "Wait, how did she do that?" This is one of those quilts. The scene is beautiful and the boats are just well done applique....not applique?.... This quilt won 1st Place in the Small Wall Quilts - Pictorial at Spring Paducah 2018 and is 58" x 38".

Jan used Fused Appliqué, Digital Fabric Printing, Hand Dyeing, Free-Motion Quilting, Fabric Painting, Thread Painting, and Thread Sketching. So, take a look closer look.

Before we get started on this weeks muses...let's announce the winner of the 2019 Men Behind the Quilts Calendar sponsored by the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show!  Diane M. Flanigan!!!  Congratulations!  And for those of you who didn't win but must have the calendar for yourself or as a gift, you can still pre-order one by clicking here.

It is the downhill slide to July and you know what that means!!!  The 4th of July!!! (also the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, lol)  Some stitchers are so much more organized than I am and have already decked out their houses! For those quilters who live in the US...time to get decorating for this big holiday.  But, for those of you who are in other countries, the ideas posted here can be modified to include your country's colors and flag to be displayed on your nation's holiday!  We quilters are a country united and our flag is fabric, LOL.  I was so tickled when I visited my friend Leslie's (Grammie Crew) house and it was all ready for July. Her stitching skill and talent for decorating is amazing.  I always come away inspired!  It is at times like this that I wish I didn't suffer from "Monkey Brain." But, alas I come from a long line of ADHD personalities and run from project to project with the hysteria of a quilter out of control!  And, truth be told, I am happiest when I am in love with everything I am buried in, LOL.  I hope you enjoy this little collage of Leslie's decor.

And, if you want to be inspired by Leslie on a regular basis you can find her on Instagram here.

This is not a "typical Smilebox" It contains only a single picture collage. When you click on it, it will enlarge the photo.

One of our favorite TQS guests is adding a great achievement to her list. Jenny Bowker is going to made an officer in the Order of Australia. It recognizes her work on Australia-Middle East cultural relations through the preservation of traditional arts.
 Jenny wrote on Facebook:

I am absolutely moved and thrilled at today’s award and even more by the waves of congratulations from friends all over the world.
Thank you. I have never understood why the bottom of my heart is any better than any other part - but thank you.
Another article is now online.
That lead line is a reference to a question I once asked Bob.
“How can I be a diplomat’s wife? I haven’t a clue what is expected of me.”
His response, “You can’t represent Australia by pretending to be the French Ambassador’s wife. Just be yourself and do what you want to do.”
I pass that on to other diplomats all the time.
The spelling error was not mine.

Laura has a great little hand-sewing project for you. Quick and easy, this etui (a small ornamental case for holding needles, cosmetics, and other articles) is a perfect companion for stitching on the road.

Made with felt, a stiff interfacing like Timtex, and only two hand embroidery stitches, this little etui measures about 5″ x 6″.

Watch Laura in Show 1009: "Stamp Out" Fabric where she reviews the ten commandments of a fused art quilt, demonstrates a variety of hand embroidery stitches, and shows how to create and use hand-carved stamps to add texture and dimension to your fabric stash.

For six days in March 2011, the American Folk Art Museum dramatically transformed the Park Avenue Armory's historic Wade Thompson Drill Hall with 650 Red and White quilts from the private collection of Joanna S. Rose. Infinite Variety - Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts was the largest exhibition of quilts ever held in New York City.

And now, for your enjoyment, a video with just a small slice of the exhibit.

Laura at SewVeryEasy has a great tote bag tutorial. The use of a recessed zipper makes this a great traveling bag. It is easy to make and no pattern is needed. Just use a few simple shapes and a seam allowance of your choice.

Barbara Vlack is an EQ (Electric Quilt) pioneer and expert. She used the EQ software program to design her fabulous appliqué quilt, Hana-Goyomi. She worked with a traditional quilt template and added her appliqué details. Patricia Belyea (Okan Arts) talks to her about the process and shares photos of her design process, inspiration, and appliqués.

TQS has recently featured Denim artist Ian Berry's work. (Click here to see.) We wanted to show you how denim was used in an Award-Winning Quilt by Noriko Nozawa. It's fun to see the denim used in log cabin squares, and the stitching of hands in pockets in very well done. Some areas are quilted heavily and some very lightly. This quilt won 2nd Place Wall Quilts - Stationary Machine Quilted at Spring Paducah 2018.
