Laura at SewVeryEasy has a great tote bag tutorial. The use of a recessed zipper makes this a great traveling bag. It is easy to make and no pattern is needed. Just use a few simple shapes and a seam allowance of your choice.

However, I'm not sure my Bernina 780 could handle the multiple layers of canvas. I've already had a problem trying to repair stitching in canvas outdoor curtains. Had to take my machine in for a repair :( Seems like the newer machines aren't as tough as the older ones were.
