We showed the marvelous quilt Keiko Morihiro made for her 30th anniversary (click here), and people asked if there were other examples of her work. This quilt, For the Wedding of My Beloved Daughter, won the Gammill Mastery Award at Houston 2017. Once again, it is handmade and took her 5 years to complete (well she had to eat!). Enjoy the close-ups and especially note the change of hues.

Melissa Mortenson of the Polka Dot Chair Blog came up with the idea of making small Easter baskets out of fabric so she could take them with her when she traveled on Spring Break. These small fabric baskets would be great for “little hands” on Easter morning. Since they are made of fabric they are also very “packable”. You can send them to friends or family far across the country!

Separated by oceans and continents, time zones and hemispheres it’s surprising how much my quilt buddy, Kaye, and I have in common. In addition to our passion for quilting, we love sharing our skills with others. We both live by the water, enjoy time spent with our grandchildren and are both blessed with a sense of humour! We have exchanged numerous emails, shared images of our work, pictures of our family and lots of laughs! I am so happy to have Kaye as my friend! Kaye is an expert in “La Passacaglia” quilting and I decided that my quilt should be made from pieced blocks. Using Aboriginal designed fabric depicting turtles, I worked on an idea based upon the dreamtime story “WAYAMBA THE TURTLE” to illustrate our unique Australian culture. (The story is on the back of the quilt). I was inspired by Maxine Rosenthal’s book “One Block Wonders”, where each hexagonal block is unique. With careful cutting and freehand machine stitching, I made more than sixty 3-inch blocks from the one piece of fabric. I arranged the blocks in a colour and design sequence that would follow the story, beginning at the top right with blocks that represented the home camp, working clockwise to the billabong and the marshland where the women and children foraged for food. This flowed into the hunting ground and then the desert and finally the petal window showing the turtle in the creek.

I have done my job as a quilter if this little quilt brings joy and warmth to my partner (#392) on the other side of the world....down under in Australia. I am naturally drawn to antique quilts, a love my Gram shared with me at an early age. And yet, at the same time, the aesthetic of modern quilts continually inspires me. So mixing the two are often a great combination for me. I like to call it modern traditional. Miniatures came to the forefront of my quilting when I discovered foundation piecing more than 20 years ago. I learned I could achieve such great precision rather easily. This miniature was especially enjoyable to create for my delightful partner Brenda! It’s been a pleasure getting to know and love her! We have SO much in common even beyond quilting. A great match and mate indeed! And what better block pattern to use ….? The pineapple is the international symbol of welcome and hospitality! I added a little “sparkle” using thread around the coral and green blocks! So befitting for my new friend and exceptional experience with the International Miniature Quilt Exchange, 2018!

While touring the International Patchwork Festival in Sitges, Ricky came across this remarkable log cabin quilt. He writes, "At the Spanish Patchwork Association show a log cabin quilt like I’ve never seen before."

People were stopped in their tracks by the "eye of this tiger" from the Central Indiana Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild. This is another QuiltCon charity challenge quilt.
Every year at QuiltCon they do a charity quilt challenge. The theme this year was "small piecing." While it can be hard to define, let’s say that small piecing would incorporate fabric pieces that are smaller than 1” in either width or length. So you might picture long, skinny strips, or little tiny squares, for example.
