Sandra Leichner's quilt, Naturalist's Notebook, won one of the top eight awards at the International Quilt Festival in Houston 2019. It's not hard to see why when you look at the appliquéd details of each individual flower and bird. The quilting is absolutely extraordinary as well and Capt'n John made sure to get a lot of close ups.

You can learn how Sandra does it in Show 1701: The Appliqué Doctor Is In.

Hand-dyed fabrics, embroidery, and Dresdens make up this adorable quilt made by Lauren Vlcek for Susan Cleveland's book. We just love the little embroidered birds. Enjoy The Birds and The Bees by Lauren Vlcek.

Another passage in life is adjusting to losing a life partner. Sandi Snow won an Honorable Mention Ribbon at the Houston Quilt Show 2019 with her quilt, Protecting the Flame. Her use of color, gradation and texture is beautifully done.

Lilo was recently lucky enough to attend the Carrefour Européen du Patchwork meeting in Sainte-Marie-Aux-Mines where she caught up with Maya Chaimovich. Maya's exhibit, Palette of Movements, was on display and Lilo got the chance to talk to her about her beginnings as a quilter, her design process, and what inspires her work. They also looked at a number of her quilts.

As there was a bit of a language barrier, Maya prepared her answers ahead of time. And, as the interview was on the grounds of the exhibit, you will notice background noise.

The quilts displayed in the video are from Maya's exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Fesitval 2018, Maya's website, and her current exhibit, Palette of Movements.

Lilo recently visited the European Patchwork Meeting in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France and discovered a wonderful exhibit they were featuring there. Swiss quilt group patCHquilt was celebrating their thirtieth anniversary by putting on a showcase of 100 challenge quilts for the occasion. The challenge was open to all members of the group of every skill level and each quilt had to adhere to the following criteria:

  • Works must be original, not from a kit and must include a red border.
  • They must be 30 cm wide, 120 cm long, and displayed portrait style.
  • The quilt must include at least 1/2 of the Edelweiss fabric (that each person received), and feature a piece of that same fabric that is 10 cm x 10 cm in size.

To join in the celebration with patCHquilt, we will be featuring four of the challenge quilts each week that were displayed as part of the exhibition at the European Patchwork Meeting.

Please enjoy the next four quilts from Elisabeth Kälin, Elizabeth Michellod-Dutheil, Elsbeth Reichstein, and Erika Bernhard.

One of the beautiful parts of traveling is homecoming...yes, we meet wonderful stitchers along the way and there are beautiful sights to behold... But, homecoming is wonderful. To reacquaint yourself with your stash while trying to decide what projects you want to start next??? With only 42 more days till Christmas, maybe a gift or two will be at the top of your list...or maybe gifting yourself with a new start?! I am giving you all a heads up for a SAL (Sew A Long) that a friend and I are going to start in January. It will be a way for me to take along a bit of home while on the road. There are no deadlines or rules, after all, quilting is supposed to be fun and relaxing! Whenever you can start, and whenever you can finish...it is all up to you!

A friend and I both fell in love with Eastmoreland by Kathy Schmitz and decided to support and encourage each other through the process.

As I have said...you make your own start time and your own deadline. Eastmoreland will be your happy place and there will be a hashtag to post your progress if you choose to share. #eastmoreland with a little bee at the end. I hope you will join me while I take a bit of home on the road.

Stay tuned and travel along with us on Quilt Roadies.

Quilting has always taken on hard subjects. My Divorce Quilt: Shredded, a quilt by Susan Fletcher King, expresses her reactions to a difficult life event. The quilt achieves strong emtions by using raw edge appliqué to effect, strong black and red images, and appears to have journal entries or letters placed throughout the quilt.

Do you know someone who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease or some other form of dementia? Both Alex and Ricky had parents who suffered and they'd like to share with you an idea that Alex's mother found particularly comforting. It is an activity mat.

Activity mats are designed to safely stimulate and soothe people with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, ADD, head trauma, or persons recovering from strokes. They are generally customized to the individual as you can see in this video with Alex and Ricky.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has a PDF with directions and photos to help you create your own activity mat. Click here to download.

Here in America we will be celebrating Thanksgiving soon, and while not quilting related, we are all about learning here at TQS. This PBS video tells us about the origins of some very traditional Thanksgiving foods. Did you know that turkeys have more than doubled in size from their origins?
