When one door closes, another one opens. This was the mindset adopted by Janet Atkins after the loss of her quilt, Kaaterskill. Cauterskill Rising was created because, as Janet puts it, "I found a silver lining - I could explore the quilt design further and use a similar color palette in a new work. Cauterskill is the alternate spelling of the original quilt name." Exhibited at Houston 2017 in the Merit Quilting, Hand category, Janet utilized impressive hand piecing and hand appliqué to bring about a new work where one once stood.

Janet says of her quilt, Flowers for my Valentine (92" x 92"), "I needed a quilt to display for Valentines day, so I decided to do one with flowers and valentines, so another quilt was born."

When Alex saw Grey & Gold by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry she was amazed at the detail and work that went into. Not one to do things at only half-speed, Caryl really took it up a notch with this one. Here's what she had to say about the quilt:

"In January of 2020, we visited the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, where they have an amazing raptor free-flight show. We shot hundreds of photos and this was the first one I chose as inspiration for a quilt. To create the design, I enhanced the image of the bird with digital editing and digital painting, then added a painted background in a gradation from white to black and gold. I used the pattern on the breast of the bird to create matching binding strips and hanging sleeves. The whole composition was printed on cotton fabric by Spoonflower. The grey hawk and the tree stump are heavily quilted, to the level of thread painting, the background is echo quilted with white thread. The backing fabric is from my Gradations collection for Benartex."

When you think of Sue Garman you're never sure what kind of quilt you're going to get. Ladies of the Sea, for example, is a Baltimore Album quilt "and each corner of the quilt has a Mariner's Compass on it." Featured at Houston 2017 in her own Sue Garman Exhibit, "Ladies of the Sea celebrates some of the greatest ships that sailed the oceans of the world. There are 16 blocks with ships appliquéd on them - and each ship is surrounded by a wreath of vines, branches, or flowers from the ship's native land." With great hand appliqué and embroidery, Sue guides you to another bountiful beauty.

It is common to say that opposites attract. The same can be said for quilting when the two fabrics you didn't like somehow look amazing together. Magnetic Attraction by Gail Stepanek and Jan Hutchison puts that theory into practice. "Four paper-pieced Compass blocks that didn't "play well" with the others were cast aside for over a year until they found this new home." Featured at Houston 2017 in the Traditional Pieced category, machine piecing, hand appliqué, and "Jan's original quilting designs add great interest" to a quilt that not so long ago was poles apart in its construction.

Magnetic Attraction by Gail Stepanek and Jan Hutchison of New Lenox, Illinois was featured in the Traditional Pieced category at Houston 2017.
