Laura Welkin takes making a 9 patch quilt to another level with her Nearly a 9 Patch quilt (which really sort of has 8 patches of amazing appliqué). Outside of the appliqué is some stunning quilting and a very unusual pieced inner border.

Nearly a 9 Patch by Laura Welkin of Noblesville, Indiana was featured in the Appliqué, Small category at Houston 2019.

The borders are fantastic! The best, most original borders I've ever looked at. This is a beautiful quilt even in it's simplicity it has so much to admire. The quilt is beautiful.

Thank you for all of the nice comments. The only piecing on this quilt is the skinny color strips in the border. The dark green border is appliqued to the strips and then appliqued to the quilt. I drew the quilting patterns and transferred them to the quilt with a light box and a blue wash out marker. The most difficult part of the quilt was trying to get a perfect miter from the appliqued border to the outer edge. After much trial and error my husband bought me a laser level (normally used for tile) and that worked wonderfully.
