How Do the Judges Ever Decide?

It must be almost impossible to judge a quilt show. We know we couldn't do it. When we saw this stunning quilt, Bouquet of Moon by Toyoko Nakajima, in Houston, we couldn't figure out how it didn't win a ribbon. It is meticulously appliquéd and beautifully hand quilted. It's a winner in our book.

It's gorgeous. Judging is so very subjective.

After working in the judging room of many large shows, I have learned that judges have to make hard choices, especially when faced with many excellent quilts. When choosing the very best quilt, little things will determine the winner & cause others to lose - consistent stitch length, shadowing, visible appliqué stitches, irregular binding, etc. They have to find the most perfect & that’s why some quilts that appear ribbon worthy do not receive the ribbon. Competition can be fierce, especially at national & international shows.

I cannot even imagine the hours spent on this beautiful, stunning quilt, the designs, colors, all of it, it is awesome.
