The colors in Audra Rasnake's quilt, Consider the Lilies, 95" x 95", are very different and very beautiful. Then we noticed there was no white...maybe a polkadot?

This quilt was in a very strong category "Hand Quilted Quilts,"  (Spring Paducah 2017) where a number of quilts deserved awards, but only three can win. (We were right that it deserved an award. The quilt won 2nd Place Hand Quilted at AQS Grand Rapids 2017). Watch for Wednesday's newsletter for another that was at an award winning level. Audra's quilt was not only hand quilted, but hand embroidered and hand appliqued and we noticed some crystals. Its design source was the Lily Pattern in Susan Brubaker Knapp's book by C&T, Appliqué Petal Party: A Bouquet of 16 Blocks and Flowering Border.

This quilt is an artistic labour of love.
How wonderful to see a quilt in
which white isn't dominating.

I think this quilt is absolutely gorgeous!!! To comment on Flower41's post; Piecing is quilting, hand quilting is quilting, machine quilting (all types) is quilting..... Why, Heck, even tying a quilt is quilting! Quilting by check does not disqualify a quilter from being a quilter, nor discounts their work as being a quilt. I guess that's why all quilt shows have different categories for entries. Personal preferance, opinion, talent and direction is what makes all quilters unique one from the other, but it is the QUILT that binds us together. And, no, I don't see hand quilting being anywhere near a lost art. It just takes longer, so production can be much slower. Have a nice day.

I love hand quilting too and this is a beautiful example of it, as is Aztec Sunset, also pictured in this blog. As I can no longer do hand quilting, I feel fortunate to have a shop nearby which can long arm them for me. This makes it possible for me to continue enjoying quilt making and to finish my projects. I consider myself to be a quilter, past and present. In this past year alone I have gifted my son in law, my grandson (queen size maple leaf block quilt in batiks), a newborn niece (crib size Irish chain) and my 5-year-old nephew (twin size log cabin) with quilts. I am now putting the finishing touches on a quilt (kaffe fassett's "donut" block) for my sister and hand piecing my interpretation of Edyta's Star's homestead quilt for my daughter. So far, no complaints from the recipients of my efforts. I think they would be surprised to learn that they were made by a "non quilter, as such."

Nice to see hand quilting. It is becoming a lost art. For some reason machine quilting has taken over and hand work is being left behind. Many quilts are so heavily quilted they could stand up alone they are so stiff. This isn't to say the machine work is not well done, it usually is and is a skill in itself. People who pay someone else to quilt their quilt are "top makers" not "quilters" as such. I am sure I am not alone in this thinking.
