Lessa Siegele, our beloved creator of the TQS 2016 BOM - The Rajah Quilt, recently sent us some photos of the Quilters' Guild of South Australia exhibition held in Adelaide. It was a special display of Rajah Quilts made by local quilters. Lessa writes, "It was wonderful to see them all lined up and one got first place in traditional quilts. It was interesting seeing the different colours people had used."

Watch Show 1801 - Piecing Perfection from the BOM Designer featuring Lessa and learn all about The Rajah Quilt. The show is currently open to everyone through August 15, 2017.

Lessa understates the importance of this quilt a little bit, in her quiet way! The Rajah Quilt is the only known convict ship quilt in existence. The female convicts were on their way from the UK to Van Diemens Land (Australia) to serve their 7 years' Transportation (a life sentence, really). They were taught to quilt by Elizabeth Fry, who believed that if they were given a marketable skill (sewing) they would be able to lift themselves out of their "evil" ways (some of them had been sentenced because they stole a loaf of bread to feed their families!). The Rajah quilt had been made as a thank you to Mrs. Fry and sent back to England for her. This quilt is a national treasure in Australia! Thank you, Lessa, for bringing this story into the public eye! Lovely quilt show of all the

Lovely to see an Australian State featured on TQS and interesting to hear of the Rajah quilt made by prisoners possibly up to 200 years ago.
