Every year at the Pacific International Quilt Festival there is a World Quilt Competition. It showcases quilts from all over the world and highlights the best of the best from many different countries. This year's competition was no different.

You'll see quilts inspired by our own Ricky Tims and TQS BOM designer, Sue Garman. Here is just a tiny little tidbit of the "I" in International at PIQF for 2010.

What began with a sketch of a woman surrounded by a garden of roses to showcase the beautiful hand-dyed velvets created by a friend, transformed into Persephone of Greek mythology. As a young maiden, Persephone, the daughter of Zeus, was snatched away by Hades, god of the underworld. she was torn between the love of two worlds, so it was decided that for six months of every year (spring and summer) she would be allowed to return to the celestial world.

Join us on this multi-part journey in the creation of a magnificent quilt designed and created by award winning quilt artist Annette M.Hendricks (Three Sisters).  From sketch to completion, Annette shares her thoughts, tools and techniques we think you will find fascinating.  The Solace of Persephone will hang in the People, Portraits & Figures gallery at the upcoming Houston Quilt Festival.

Over the next few weeks we will share the progression of this, her most recent work.   Click here for Part 1 of the journey.

Recently TQS had the opportunity to visit the original showroom and working pottery of Artus and Anne Van Briggle in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  The 1908 Dutch lowland farmhouse building was designed as a spectacular medium for displaying decorative tiles and other fired elements to their best advantage.  Visitors were exposed to a whole host of ideas on how to incorporate tile and decorative pottery in their own homes.

And why are we showcasing tile on a quilting website, you might be asking yourself?  We fell in love with the design elements, and thought they would translate very well to quilting.  Join us for a tour of one of America's oldest active art potteries.  We think you will find the visit well worth it.
