Chuck's Lone Star

Name of Maker: Martha Szescila
Chuck's Lone Star - This quilt was made during three house moves, suggested by my late husband to "distract" me from the moves. It took almost 2 years, is machine pieced, and hand quilted. Since he suggested making it (his favorite colors) it is one of my most favorite quilts and will always remind me of him. It was displayed at AQS in Paducah, my first try to enter that show. It won reserve champion at the county fair in Brenham, Texas. It was also displayed at Houston International Quilt Festival in 1989.

Scuba Diving From My Armchair - Strips of gradiated batiks are pieced to simulate the depth of the water in the ocean. Then sea weed and fish are painted on the background. Next silk ribbon, beads, and machine embroidered fish are added for a textural embellishment thus looking like a scene a scuba diver would encounter.

Maui Rainbow

Maui Rainbow - The batik strips used in the center were purchased while on vacation on Maui. The strips were sewn together to form a tube. The tube was sliced into 6" sections. Stitches were removed as you do for Bargello and the sections sewed together for the final placement. The boarder is from a piece of Ricky Tims' hand dyed fabric purchased the Super Quilt Seminar in Seattle. The quilting is done with various sizes of Hybiscus which is the state flower of Hawaii.

I usually watch the snow falling softly this time of year and as a result make snowflakes and snowmen. We had a 70 degree day in January, which set new record highs for this area. Touchdown - I was inspired to make this quilt “Touchdown” when I saw pictures of Quilting in the Country’s Quilt Airing event. The quilt was designed by Jane Quinn and the pattern is called The Painted Lady. I used glow in the dark fabric for the center white rectangles border and continued to alternate the glow in the dark white fabric with solid white fabric in the surrounding white borders creating a glow of white dashes when the lights are turned out.

mulan rouge - I designed the center and corner appliques. Norah had a class at our guild. She showed us how to design our own motif if we did not like the one on the pattern. I also changed the background by using two tones of background, black and dark gray. This added even more depth. I used pinks from dark to light on one side and pinks from medium to light on the other side. It added even more depth.

Summertime Fun - This is my Show & Tell submission for the Kool Kaleidoscope contest. I had so much fun making it -- hence the name "Summertime Fun". The back of the quilt is just as amazing as the front. Look at the next picture and you will be amazed by the wonderful quilting by my good friend Tim Juhl. We are both equally delighted on how it turned out. Tim is a music teacher at our local high school and as you can see he really has a special gift when it comes to longarm quilting.
