Spring in Kyoto - There is a Mount Fuji flowering cherry tree right next to the french windows which the table I quilt at is near and it inspired me to make this quilt last spring. Each of the blossoms are made up of 5 petals fused together on an applique mat and then en mass I sprinkled them onto the quilt top - I fused them where they fell and then stitched them in place. Although you can't see it in the photo the quilt is quilted in a traditional japanese quilt pattern.
Hearts are Trumps - I originally completed this quilt as a fund raiser for the hospital that looked after me after my heart attack but the bureaucracy was so unbending that it wasn't possible to raffle the quilt to donate the money raised to the cardiac ward. As a result it now lives on the bottom of the spare bed and I've become rather fond of it not least for the rather fun quilting I did in it. I thought hearts were appropriate for a cardiac ward!
Granny Squares - I learned this idea from a friend : it is a type of "quilt-as-you-go" using 4 squares of fabric & one of batting: sewed together cleverly & then finished & quilted "Granny" squares are butted together & stitched with a bridging or similar decorative stitch. This Christmas Throw/Lap quilt is done with Christmas fabrics. Name comes from the crocheted squares granny used to make for blankets.
Wedding Nine Patch - This quilt was a gift to celebrate my son's wedding in July 2008. My daughter-in-law chose the fabrics and designed the combination of Nine Patches with plain 6 inch finished blocks. There are 256 blocks in total. I made the 2 pillow shams with left-over fabric.
Comforting Memories - Blocks are made from denim jeans, bib overalls from my parents (including worn and stained) and thrift store finds with select blocks embroidered with family names. Made as graduation gift for my niece to remind that she is loved.
Pedernales Cabin Spring - The Quilt is named thus because it reminds me of the wildflowers in bloom in spring here in Texas. It was made for a bed for our cabin on the Pedernales River.
Commissioned quilt without a name - This quilt was commissioned by a friend of ours for his Mother as a Birthday Gift. The pattern was adapted by a quilt he picked out of a magazine. I have looked everywhere in this sewing room and cannot find the pullout from the magazine...I am beside myself!!! Anyways its basically a 9 patch and an appliqued star in a block put on point. The stars were actually strip pieced then appliqued
Texas Flag - I made this quilt for an auction benefiting a friend of ours who was injured in an auto accident. The winning bid was a generous $2700.00!!!
Hi Honey, I'm Home! - My design has the birds sitting in a Mountain Laurel (CT State flower), and uses Pamela Humphries Cardinal patterns and a hummingbird based on a McKenna Ryan pattern.
