After the Winter Storm - In the winter of 2009 we( in the Seattle area) were buried in snow. lol One evening I looked out on my deck and saw the snow piled on the railing and on the bird bath. Genuine Jazz in July
Name of Maker: Denise Dykstra
Genuine Jazz in July - My sister founded and ran a jazz festival in Breckenridge, CO for 19 years. It featured Colorado jazz musicians and each year, a beautiful t-shirt designed by a local artist. When she sold the festival, I made her a quilt of all the t-shirts. The quilter, Karen Gilson, quilted the names of musicians and bands (over 60 of them!) in the borders. The quilt has taken on a life of it's own. It was featured in a Ricky Tims quilting drive-by; It was presented to my sister on her 50th birthday - at a huge family reunion; and It won a ribbon at the Iowa State Fair! WHAT an adventure!
Great-Grandma Van Heukelom's unfinished quilt
Name of Maker: Minnie Van Heukelom and Denise Dykstra
Great-Grandma Van Heukelom's unfinished quilt - One day my mom mentioned a box of "old fabric scraps" she had from her grandmother. When we opened the box, it was an unfinished double wedding ring quilt top. All of the fabric is in the box, ready to finish it. Since Mom doesn't make quilts, I begged for the opportunity to finish it. So, here goes... And the mystery is...why didn't Great-Grandma finish it? Why are (most of) the cut out pieces just a shade too small? And, somebody else worked on it (who?) because there are some "obviously not 1930s fabric" in it. (I'm taking those out.) I also have ALL the cardboard templates, 2 newspaper articles (dated) about Double Wedding Ring quilt patterns, some old pins, needles, thread... This is such a treasure!
