Pain in the Knee
Name of Maker: Mary Rapp
Pain in the Knee - I actually started this quilt late in 2008, following total knee replacement surgery, but didn't finish it until recently. Each of the peach on-point squares was free-motion embroidered with an oriental character prior to piecing, and the characters tell the story of my "journey." Each of the shapes surrounding those squares is quilted with a koi fish and I machine-quilted a sashiko-like design in the dark border. This is definitely the most personal quilt I have ever made.
Quiet Celebration
Name of Maker: Betty Jo Tatum
Quiet Celebration - My 2011 Hoffman Challenge quilt. There are really too many flowers for a traditional Ikebana arrangement she is making, but it seems to work. I see her as a little older Geisha on a quiet day celebrating something special as she arranges her beautiful flowers. The Japanese characters say Celebrate beauty and woman or womanhood.
Flower Garden
Name of Maker: JANBLOCK
Flower Garden - One of a series of quilts I'm making to give my teen-age grandchildren when they get married.
In Bloom
Name of Maker: Shirlee Carter
In Bloom - Spring flowers emerged using a tropical print and the One Block Wonders technique. I used Ricky's narrow border technique to add the quarter inch accent inner border.
Alphabet
Name of Maker: Peggy Bernal
Alphabet - I received Yoko Sato's book as a birthday gift a few years ago, and fell in love with the primitive alphabet that was in the book, and I finally made it. It is hand appliqued and quilted. It is mostly made of Japanese taupe woven and printed cotton fabrics.
Animal Kingdom
Name of Maker: Shirlee Carter
Animal Kingdom - This quilt was inspired by a trip to the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Disneyworld. Some of the fabrics in the quilt are from Africa.
New Year
Name of Maker: Peggy Bernal
New Year - I made this quilt for my daughters wedding in 2003
Dear Harbor Seals
Name of Maker: Sheila Gaquin
Dear Harbor Seals - The blue sea weed in the lower right-hand corner was fused on, everything else was pieced from the top.
Don't Worry, Be Happy
Name of Maker: Shirlee Carter
Don't Worry, Be Happy - Scrappy quilt using ragged edge technique. I added very small buttons to the center of each block. The grandkids loved trying to find and identify all the animal buttons.
My First Sampler
Name of Maker: Terry Knott
My First Sampler - Our LQS has a unique $10 quilt club. For $10 at the beginning of the year and as long as the block shown is completed by the next month, at the end of year you end up with a top. Sometimes, you need to add your own fabric. I added the fabrics for the borders, the hour glass blocks and the tan/white/red squares in the largest lower block. The design is always original and the designer, JoLyn Buhl, works to strengthen a set of quilting skills. The theme this year was learning a variety of piecing an applique techniques. I quilted this project on my domestic machine and used over 3,000 yards of Superior's Masterpiece and King Tut as well as YLI silk and invisible thread. I used Ricky Tim's technique to apply a piped binding. For more photos check my blog: http://www.thequiltshow.com/os/myblog_edit.php/customers_blog_id/11895

Still Standing
Name of Maker: JoAnn Camp
Still Standing - I made the puff paint tree a couple of years ago and it hung around waiting for a place to be planted. I finally designed a home for it. The sky is painted and commercial print and batik fabrics are used, along with some other items. It is raw-edge, fusible and machine quilted.
Summer's Gold
Name of Maker: JoAnn Camp
Summer's Gold - Based on a photo I took last summer in my husband's garden. Raw-edge fusible machine applique and machine quilting.
My Driveway
Name of Maker: Susan Kohl
My Driveway - Using techniques from Pat Durbin's book on mosaic landscapes and a photo I took of the 1/4 mile driveway to my house, I made this art quilt with cotton batiks. Then I overlaid tulle and machine quilted the top.
Tucson January 8th
Name of Maker: Sheila Gaquin
Tucson January 8th - I made this quilt after the Tucson shootings to express my grief and sympathy for the victims. The top of the "sun" is a stylized section of the Arizona state flag, the lower half a disheartened sun. It is collaged on muslin from hundreds of small bits of fabric, then free motion quilted. There are 19 fussy-cut flowers, one for each victim worked into the design.
Too Coy
Name of Maker: Marilyn Knepp
Too Coy - Made in a week-long class with Susan Carlson, who is a wonderful teacher. Fabric scraps were arranged, then glued. Even the border is pieced and attached with glue. The piece is covered with tulle--turquoise for this piece--before quilting so the scrap edges are tamed under the quilting foot.
