Linen Trousseau
Name of Maker: Marianna Campato
Linen Trousseau - This linen table runner was presented to my Aunt as part of her wedding trousseau in September of 1945, by her mother. The linen was created from the flax grown on my Grandmother's farm in Calabria, Italy. The runner was then designed, crocheted and embroidered by my Grandmother. The linen came to America through Ellis Island, in 1909. In the fall of 2007, my Aunt presented this linen to me. I crocheted and added the three doilies on one end of the runner to compliment my Grandmother's cutwork, then machine quilted the piece. I chose a raw silk for the backing and the binding to match the linen.

9-11-01 In Memory

Strip Farm Mask
Name of Maker: Ruth A. White
Strip Farm Mask - I was inspired by the oddly shaped strip farms I espied one wonderful, clear flight. I saw a Mesoamerican mask in my final design, which led me to base my quilting patterns on ancient Mexican motifs. The two catfish represent the Mayan Hero Twins, Xbulanque and Hunahpu, who later became the sun and moon. Photography by artist.

I am still in the process of adding pearl beading to the oval feather pattern that surrounds the quilt. I will update the photo when it is finished!
Spring Medallion
Name of Maker: Unknown Embroiderer
Spring Medallion - I purchased this linen in an antique store. The embroidery and Crocheted border were already done by an unknown artist. It is quilted with pastel Rainbow, So Fine and Bottom Line threads by Superior Threads.
A View Askew
Name of Maker: Ruth A. White
A View Askew - Seventh in my nebula series and fifth in my window series, "A View Askew" toys with shape and boundaries. The gossamer 'gasses' float off the edge of space while the 'window' opens onto an inner view of the nebula. I dyed the silk organza in the microwave using Procyon dyes, and reverse appliquéd the parallelogram from the top and batting, then the backing separately, inserting silk organza to fill the space between. Photography by Andrew Gillis of Cascadilla Photography, Ithaca, NY
Phase Shift
Name of Maker: Ruth A. White
Phase Shift - A desire to use some of the luscious fabric I dyed in Elin Noble's 2007 Quilting By the Lake Shibori workshop inspired this depiction of lunar phases. Experimenting with reverse appliquilting to create multiple 'windows' in the quilt presented a challenge to precisely align the front and back, which is also pieced. There are five layers in all but the single-layer 'windows', with one of the layers being cotton canvas to maintain the shape of the edges. Definitely not a candidate for hand quilting! Photography by artist.
A Child is Born

A Child is Born - Adapted from Jean Wells Portraits from Nature show using mini quilts within a quilt. I used embroidery and lace and thread instead of applique.

Caden's Quillow
Name of Maker: Frances Moores
Caden's Quillow - Just a little something for my youngest nephew for Christmas.
Stained Glass
Name of Maker: Susan McFarland
Stained Glass - These quilts are made using Brenda Henning's approach to stained glass quilts. There are no bias strips for the "leading". This is simply fabric fused onto a black piece of fabric, leaving some of the black exposed to be the leading. Fun and easy project. Quilted with variegated threads to match the "glass". I used Superior Threads "Rainbows" in several shades.
Ferri's Alef-Bet Quilt

Ferri's Alef-Bet Quilt - I made this for my at the time 3 year old daughter, based on the Hebrew alef-bet. Her name is "Atara," which means "Crown," and begins with the letter "Ayin," hence the crown. This was so much fun to design!
