Ruffled Roses Ruffled Roses - Introduction

Introduction Package: Ruffled Roses is a medallion quilt. The center block is set on point and is surrounded by many borders. Each month, directions for various parts of the quilt will be provided online; your task is to print out the instructions and make whatever is called for. You can always modify the instructions, of course, to suit your skill level and your personal likes and dislikes. The finished quilt, as designed, measures approximately 87 inches square. There are twelve separate patterns. Each pattern includes blocks and/or border units, and assembly instructions. As you complete each set of units, your quilt top will grow until the final border is added.

Ruffled Roses - Month 1

Do purple roses really exist in Nature? Of course they do -they are believed to represent both enchantment and love at first sight. Perhaps that is why they are at the center of the Ruffled Roses quilt. The center block of this quilt is appliqued. If you do not do applique, feel free to use the same fabrics that you would otherwise use for the applique, and make a favorite 15-inch pieced block. Throughout the making of this quilt, you should feel free to modify your quilt in any way you desire.

Beloved Beauties Additional Instructions:
These directions will explain all the necessary changes if you are using the Beloved Beauties fabrics. Also included are pre-cutting directions in order to save larger pieces of fabric for the later months that will be useful for both kits.

Ruffled Roses - Month 2

This month, you will be adding two borders, and separating them with "floaters."Floaters are small border strips - usually very narrow - that fill space between two pieced borders, so that the piecing "fits" onto the quilt center. The beauty of floaters is that they can also be used very effectively to visually separate borders, as well as to insert accent colors into a quilt top.

Margo's additional directions replaces one of the pieced borders with one wide floater and includes directions for folded corners to get perfect miters. She also shows how you can twirl your intersections on the lattice borders so they press really flat. You have options, and you may add some new tricks to your quilting tool belt.

Sue loves swag borders, especially when they pop into the middle of a quilt, like an afternoon surprise, instead of waiting to appear along the sunset edge of the quilt. This month's swag border softens the overall look of the quilt with its ruffled edge.

Ruffled Roses - Month 4

This month, another border will be added: a four-patch border. Making a scrappy border out of an assortment of fabrics is a great way to make your eyes dance across the surface of a quilt. After you finish the four-patch border, you will also make four pieced swag border units. These will be used in Month 12, but starting them now will make the work of Month 12 much easier.

Follow these instructions if you are using the Beloved Beauties kit. Margo explains which fabrics are substituted on the pieced swag units and shows how to twirl the intersections of the 4-patches to make everything lay nice and flat.
