No mystery...just a very sharp, pointed scissor and time. Also, I used a batik with a tight weave. :D :D :D

This is not really a reply but a question for Lauren Vicek, did you use a scalpel to cut out the "quilting" word? I am just starting this project and allthough I have cut out the words I just wondered how you and anyone else cut out the did it.

Smashing Nancy :D

I had no problems with the metallic after all. Made a boo boo on the quilt sandwich, should listen to instructions. I sprayed the wadding and so when the top was placed round it I was left with a sticky border  Sorted after whizzing round the edges and trimming, another lesson learnt :D

Margo - Your project is just beautiful!! It just gets better with each addition!

I've made it through lesson 2, so I believe I'm caught up now (will check after this post). Here's mine after lessons 1 and 2:

I used some colorful metallics for lesson 2. Sorry the picture isn't good enough to show the pretty colors.

Things I have learned with this project so far...I used satin for my very top piece, while I didn't have any fits from my metallic thread, because of the nap of the satin you can hardly see it--lesson learned. :| Then I used a fabric with too much design so my words on the quilting = block is kinda loss (I think I can fix this with some bling--we will see. :x Then I have an unbalance of color on my little quilt. I really like the blues an purples that I used but I am going to have to do some more fixing with the bling. :? Last thing I learned--how to get a wonderful stitch-in-the-ditch that doesn't show: first use monopoly clear thread, forget to hold on to said thread and stitch very carefully in the ditch. When you get to the end of your seam you will not be able to see it. Yep, thread came out of the needle. No picture yet--I want to get some doctoring done before I show you.

Wow, Margo! I just went through the entire thread of Lorchen's challenge to you and loved your wall hanging with all its embellishments--everything looked so perfectly thought out and I'm sure the grandchildren are well planted in their new home with a great memento from you! Loved your other quilts too as well as Terry's Grandma's Flowers--so great that she joined the challenge! I'm really glad you gave me the URL to it--totally enjoyed it! :D :D :D

Now...back to Fancification....
Today I got the sky quilted with metallics, and got sort of carried away!
That was fun! No problems when I loosened my tension and used the right needle and presser foot and slowed my speed down. It was fun to make the zig-zag get wide and narrow!

If you were smart to take Dr. Bob up on his offer for a free DVD last month, you might want to review his advice on there about sewing with metallics. Among other things, if your metallic is a flat fiber (like christmas tree tinsel?) you will get lots more sparkle if you set the spool on your machine so that the thread pulls off of the side of the spool or cone, so the thread doesn't twist as it goes through the thread path to the needle. Think of it as unwinding toilet paper! If it comes off the side of the core, it comes off flat, but if you pull it up over the top of the cone, the paper will be severely twisted. Same for the thread, and the flatter the thread, the more area for light to bounce off the shiny surface!

You can still get the DVD here: https://www.superiorthreads.com/shop/product/DVD-Thread-Seminar/

If you don't have his DVD, there is some great info about metallics in these two brief videos from his web site:

Does Lorchen have something to show? :D :D :D

Oh Renata, we can get each other in a mess, can't we! Check this forum topic at the bottom of page 2 for the results of the challenge:

If I remember correctly :?: :?: , this was Lorchen's response some challenges I made in January 2011 to everyone to tidy up our sewing spaces.
