Hi everyone---Well if you woondering if entering contests/shows ever pays off
it does. I got into the Fairfield Processing Calelndar for 2013. They give it out to their customers but was a competition to make an art quilt for their American Spirit Batting. Copy this link to your browser this link to see mine and all other11 winners.
http://www.fairfieldworld.com/gallery.php?type=gallery&id=18 My quilt is the Boat/Harbor one. Click to enlarge.
The Fairfield blog is also interesting:
https://www.facebook.com/FairfieldWorld
They may do another calendar for next year too. I won batting, $50 gift certificate for my fabric store, 10 calendars, 4 cups with my quilt on it etc. FUN
The quilts themselves were on display at Houston Quilt Market, and will be in a special exhibit at the Road to California quilt show this month and then at the Portland Ore Quilt Market in May.
ALSO I did a quilt for the Road to California that mentioned in a previous comment and I got in! Judging for the prizes is soon. If you are in California and go to the show, say hi to my quilt. This is really thrilling since both my sister and I are really new to entering major shows. I hope you all give it a try if you have never done so.
I know there are some very famous memners on the Quilt Show site that would say the same thing. Happy New Year to all.

That is so cool. Are you Marlene? That's a beautiful quilt!

I have a quilt in the Road to California also this year as do several other TQS members. I have learned something every time I've entered a quilt. Usually you get judges comments back about your quilts, and often I have gotten comments from friends who see them but it's wonderful to have people see them. But be assured you don't have to enter into a contest to enjoy this challenge.

So excited to see some of you are still planning on taking up the challenge even if it ends up being for a different time. My father was a civil engineer and worked on many wonderful projects. He always wanted to build his own house but never got it done before he died, so I'm quilting a blueprint of a house and dedicating this quilt to his memory. I hope it comes out ok. I got exactly the right color blue fabric. :D Should be challenging though.

Heather that's a beautiful design. Lots of curved pieces there. Have you done that before? Get some practice in before you try it for real.

Wendy, it's show 906. There are 3 shows free over the holidays so I decided to watch them again - even though I think I already have them on my shows list. Ep. 701 with Nancy Brown would have been useful to you when you were doing your recent quilt with the dog and boat for your friend. Oh well.

I've done curves before, but yes, will definitely do practice before I start for real. :)

Thank you for the kind words!

oh, it's not the perfectionist aspect holding me back this time, it's just that in my head, this is a gorgeous design. I'm afraid my skill level may not be quite to what it needs to be to actually pull this off.....here's the drawing, though I've tweaked the coloring just a smidge since then.

Also I plan to use more free-form pieces, not so much exact rectangles. Anyway, this is the basic idea....it's just scary taking an image from my head (it's been living there for 18+ months after all) and making it reality, ya know? But I'll have fun with it, for sure!

The idea is, the bottom/left half (picture a diagonal from top left to bottom right) will be in the colors of the cobblestone -- tan, beige, terra cotta, very dark browns. The top/right half will be the colors from nature -- blues/creams/oranges/pinks, depending on whether sky, bird, ocean waves/sand or flower.

In my mind's eye, it comes out striking, and stunningly so. In reality......we'll see. I'm sure I will love it, just hopefully I can make it look how it looks in my head.....

Well Heather you are ahead of me. I don't have mine either drawn or drafted. And I keep changing my mind about what I want to do. But I am thinking I will just settle on an idea and if I like it I might do a different one another time. Thanks for the nudge BJ. I am spending this evening sorting all my coloured scraps into different baskets.

well, I'm cheating a bit :) I have had the idea for about 18 months, the fabric was all bought about a year ago, the pattern was drawn out in EQ7 about 7 or 8 months ago.....Betty Jo's challenge just happened to be a theme I can squeeze my quilt into and gave me (hopefully, haven't cut anything yet....) the push (read: SHOVE) I needed to actually take the plunge and cut that fabric......

here's hoping it turns out as well in real life as it looks in my head

Yes - this project is on my list - the pattern is made, the color study is complete, now I have to select the color scheme I plan to use.

still planning to join in, Betty Jo! I'm hoping to work on my son's comic strip quilt and get it finished while on Christmas break (or soon thereafter!!), and then will pull out my Brazil fabrics for the Brazil quilt (based on cobblestone street/sidewalk designs....). I've committed to not buying ANY new fabric this whole year unless it is for a specific purpose that is for an ALREADY PURCHASED project, as my TO DO cabinet is overflowing. I will have PLENTY to keep me busy all year even w/o new fabric purchases, hard as that might be. Must get some of these ideas from head to paper to fabric!!! So, happily joining in with mine :) I'll get started in January, but it's drawn and drafted, I just have to cut and sew........
