Well I have actually done applique before, raw edge applique and reverse raw edge applique. But thought I would give the needle turn a try this go around.

So glad to help!! :D
I'm just thrilled that so many newbies are trying the BOM project! It doesn't have to be needleturn....just find a technique that you ENJOY!!

Margo, I too much give you much great thanks!!!
I am a fast learner, and my dear Mother-in-law showed me how to needle turn applique just so I could do this BOM.
However having your pictures and step-by-step really help when I have a !DUH! moment.

thank you Margo

Margo thanks again for all your photos and tips of wisdom. I love how your March block is coming along. I have one stem sewn down, but I love the process.

I thought of sending that quilt in for the contest but I've lost the record of where I found the pattern, and Ricky made the statement that having people in it wasn't such a good idea.

Did I mis judge? I thought it was cute too, but am rather prejudiced about the young lady in the picture!

Mandy,
You are not alone by any means I have been very busy too and trying to learn how to machine applique (very new to me). You are ahead of me as is my quilting friend "Kc123" who is hand appliqueing hers. I too hope to have my Jan. block done by the end of Feb.

Just wanted to drop in and let you all know I have not dropped off the edge of the earth, lol. Life has simply interviened and slowed my progress. Today, though, I spent a good while on my January block finishing the last stem and I almost have the vase finished too. I saved the flowers for last because I was hoping a fabric would sing for me on those - it sort of has so we will see. Hopefully I will be posting January before the end of February  8)

Lynn!! Your BOM is just WONDERFUL!!

This is my first time too doing machine applique!! I did not know what to use with my new machine (Huskvarna/Viking Sapphire 870) and Bob, Mr. Superior Threads himself, recommended I use Monopoly (clear) on top and So Fine on the bottom!! AND I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH IT!! Damaris

Posting my BOM!
I used Sharon Schamber's method, and ended up liking the YLI wonder invisible clear thread and the Superior clear invisible, and the Sew-Art invisible clear. I bought a spool of Gutterman invisible but it was so heavy it looked terrible. It must be that it is designed for a different application than invisible applique. I always thought that Gutterman was a good brand of thread, so I have to assume that is the case.

What do all of YOU use?

Lynn

Your block looks great, Lynn! I LOVE the purple vase! :D

I really like using the YLI and SewArt "invisible" threads because they are both really soft and pliable and easy to work with. I haven't tried the Superior brand yet, but plan to when I run out of what I have on hand right now.

Thanks for the kudos, Ann!!
I realize that needleturn is not a technique that everyone will use for this project, but hope that my tutorial will encourage those who haven't done it before to give it a try.
I've also demonstrated making bias stems using the Clover Bias Tape Maker, and how to do the Stem Stitch like Suzanne Marshall showed on episode 203 in case anyone is interested.
Everyone just needs to find techniques that they enjoy and have fun with all their projects!
SEW LONG!

Margo's needleturn applique 20 Feb 2008 09:15 #13976

Hi Margo, I was able to view your needleturn pictures on Webshots by going to your profile. Thanks for taking the time to provide such a clear explanation for those of us who have never tried this technique. I believe with your pictures and instructions, even a beginner like myself should be able to do it. Thanks again

Posting my BOM!

I went on a quilting retreat this weekend and finally finished my January block, cut out my Feb block (forgot to bring the backing for Feb) so am posting it (Jan).

I was able to glean from the experience of the other 8 retreaters as to what threads they have used to machine applique and to experiment as to what I (and my machine) liked, so that was a great experience!
