Re: Batiks 18 Jan 2011 14:47 #53728

I already sent a message about participating but I forgot to mention I also ordered Edyta's papers.
The last time I did an exchange similar to this was for the Y2K project. Anyone remember that??
Can't wait to get started. Kudos for doing this Debbie.

Thanks, AnnElizabeth. I have a feeling Laundry Basket Quilts is going to be innundated with orders! I'll be anxious to see all the variety too.

I'd like to participate as well. I'll await more info once it's posted. I will be ordering Edyta's Triangle papers so no need to send me any of those. It will be interesting to see all the variety when it arrives in the mailbox. Thanks for taking this on, Debbie!

GMHOWL, It really doesn't matter how many particpants are in the exchange...in fact, the more the merrier. What does matter is that everyone makes the same size squares which will be 2" finished. That way there are enough of the same size to make a great finished quilt. I'm going to run some of my ideas by Margo tomorrow and then I'll write a new post with more information.

Re: Batiks 18 Jan 2011 14:13 #53722

Wouldn't how many we make depend on how many participants we have? Would we use a different light and med/dark on the 3 sheets of triangles? I am in with Batiks and prints, variety is the spice of life. Looking forward to starting this exchange and seeing all the different fabrics. I have 1/2 sq paper triangles so all I need would be an address to mail them once everything is in place. Debbie thanks for taking this on, sounds like a lot of fun.

Patti, if you want me to send you the papers, I'll be happy to once we decide how many everyone wants to make. If you do decide you want to dive into the drafting, remember that they need to be 2" finished squares and the paper needs to be easy to tear away from the stitching.

We can be flexible on how many each person wants to contribute as long as they are kept in increments of 28 and 28 should probably be the minimum. If someone wants to send in 10 sheets of 28, they'll get back 280 squares, etc.

I'll plan on ordering the papers as soon as I hear back from other members.

On the show it looked like Edyta's paper was the same layout as Sue Garman's from the 2009 BOM which I am still making and have. I'd have to go back and measure it because I think Sue's made 1 inch squares. Is it difficult to figure out how to draw out lines for the larger square do you think? I was just yesterday looking for a good book on drafting because I suck at that. So if it is difficult, I'm in on buying a few of your sheets.

Here's a thought I had about using 2" Half-Square Triangle Papers. As Clara mentioned, they are in increments of 28 per sheet and there are 25 sheets per package. I ordered yesterday from LaundryBasketQuilts.com and they were $10.95 a package, which included shipping.

It wouldn't be a requirement, but it would be nice if most of us could use these. If you didn't want to order an entire package, I thought I could order a supply from Edyta, then each participant could send me a stamped-self envelope and I could mail the papers back to you. I'll have to see how many fit in a standard envelope without getting to creased. They come to about 44 cents for each sheet.

When I did this with my guild, we each made 84. I believe it is important that we all make the same amount so it doesn't make the distribution too confusing.

Clara has generously offered to help since she lives somewhat close-by in Austin and her parents don't live too far from me.

Think about how many you'd each like to make and whether and if you'd be interested in my ordering the papers.
2 sheets = 56
3 sheets = 84
4 sheets = 112
5 sheets = 140

Do we all agree to use both batiks and prints?

What would be a good time from to get them turned in? One sheet sews up very quickly, but considering mail service, we'd need to factor that into our decision, especially if coming from outside the U.S. We could set an April or May deadline for mailing the triangles to me and then Clara and I could distribute and send back to you. Depending on how many we have, the distribution may take a while.

We would also do as Clara suggested as far as returning the triangles to you. When you send me the triangles, you'll include a stamped self addressed 'envelope' with enough postage to return it to you. We may have to resort to a little larger envelope, probably a 5 x 7 manilla type, that will hold up well during delivery. We sure don't want to take a chance on our fabric being damaged.

You can also email me throught my TQS User Name: NaneeWolf.

I'm am really looking forward to this. And members outside the U.S., please, please consider joining our exchange.

Debbie

I'd like to participate with any kind of fabric. Maybe after we do a batik exchange, we can do another category.

Re: Batiks 18 Jan 2011 12:45 #53715

Edyta's triangle paper looks like each sheet yields 28 half-square triangles. Why not work in increments of 28 of the 2 inch finished size?

@Debbie I live in the Austin area and my parents live on the southwest part of Houston. I might be able to come down and help on a weekend. Mom always likes an extra visit.

I'll be happy to take this on, Margo. It will take a little time to get the 'rules' together and I would like to get the majority of participants to agree on the number, the fabrics, etc. I'll wrap my mind around it this afternoon and make sure I have all my ducks in a row, then I'll post questions that they can respond to. Once we get a general consensus, game on!
