TOPIC: New Bernina

23 Jul 2008 13:16 #22724

Guess I'll jump in on this topic. I would love to have the new machine but have not done any embroidery so can't justify the new 830.

I do a lot of machine quilting and enjoy it. I've always wanted a machine with a larger harp and was thrilled when I heard this one was coming. I am seriously thinking of the new 820. I will need to wait to see more details. I'm wondering if it will fit in my cabinet or would I have to get a new cabinet. Our LQS will be having some get-togethers to give out information so I'll check one of those out.

I've also always wanted a long arm but have no room in our house to put one. After the BSR came out, I decided that I would be happy with doing my quilting on a stationary machine. With the larger harp, I think the 820 could be my "long arm".

Sorry this is so long but just thought I'd jump in.

What I think is that there is no way in this life I would or could consider paying this much for a sewing machine! That's what I really think. Nothing against Bernina. I wouldn't pay that much for a Viking or a Brother or a Janome either.

Now before anyone gets offended, I will explain that I don't have any desire to embroider so that lets that part go. And I already have an OLD Bernina 830 (1972 vintage) and a NEW Janome 6600 and a NEW Janome HeartTruth machine. I can do everything I currently want on these 3 machines, so ......... . . .

I will have to admit that my heart did a jolt when I heard the asking price!!! :x

Yes, the wider harp would be nice .... and I guess the extra bobbin would be nice, but....... so would all vacation and no work, and a perfect spouse and perfect children and grandchildren, and perfect health, and perfect weather.....

So, maybe I'm the grinch who stole Christmas or something...... :D

I think I really pushed it to the limit getting the 730, so I am trying to avoid wanting the 830. :D I think I would love the bigger embroidery space - mainly for quilting quilts. I find that embroidery is not my passion and I don't do it anywhere near as much as I should. I heard that they are going to have another model - the 820 - that focuses on quilting. I think I would love to have that permanently set up on a quilting frame. However, once the price of that is known, I would have to compare it to a long arm before deciding. But mainly, I don't think I even dare suggest to my DH for many years to come that I want another sewing machine. He was a sweetie and surprised me with this one. So for now, I need to just be grateful for what I have.

Libbi, I personally cannot afford the big expense. I will stick with my 440QE and muddle along with my BSR and do the best I can. Maybe if I were younger and more creative and into embroidery, I would think about it. But I'm not. I knew I wouldn't ever be buying the new Bernina and honestly, never even watched the promotion. Is it really worth $10,000-$12,000? 22 Jul 2008 23:51 #22683

:o I thought that there would be lots more comments on the features of the new Bernina in the forum.

I'll go first and open myself up for rebuttal.

IMHO, the physical sewing space is the biggest advantage I see and then all the bobbin features. Maybe all the embroidery advancements are very important to those whose main interest is embroidery. Many of the other features I have compensated for with attachments (eg. spool holder) or modifications to my sewing space (eg. lighting). Personally I do not like too much computer power in the machine itself. Just another device to keep updated. I already get too many "blue screens of death" with the mobile, laptop, desktop, iPod, etc. :(

I chose the 630E over the 730E. Maybe, just maybe I will consider the 820. My Bernina dealer here in Switzerland and I have already discussed that option. He thinks that he will have a 830 in the shop in January. He already has a order for one from someone from the UK!

What do you REALLY think?

Well, I'm definitely not going to buy that new Bernina. Sometime in the not too distant future my car will need replacing. My income (no husband to pamper me) is ok, but doesn't allow for luxuries, and my machine gets uses mainly for straight stitch sewing or zigzag. I have a lovely, relatively inexpensive Husqvarna Interlude, and a lovely little Frister and Rossman Cub 4 from the early 70s. Somehow I don't think that my quilts would be technically any better or visually more exciting if they were done on a top of the range machine.

Please, I don't want to mislead you, I do not speak all those languages. I wish I did. I speak halting French and I've been here for 8 years  I was speaking passable Italian in the mid 90's, but I haven't used it often since then. And, "If you don't use it, you lose it" is a very true cliche in my case.

Wow... I envy your speaking ability. Knowing that many different languages must be wonderful. And, being able to retire in Switzerland is simply awesome. I would love to be able to visit your country but I don't think I could be in an airplane for that length of time. We hardly ever fly any more because of how uncomfortable it has become on flights within the U.S.
