In this technique-packed episode, pattern and fabric designer Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts amazes Alex and Ricky with an easy method for producing dozens of accurate half-square triangle units in minutes with just two pieces of fabric and her Triangle Exchange Paper. The “exchange” of ideas continues as Edyta shows how to enliven your quilts with diamonds, rectangles, and other shapes made from strips and using her clever “Strip Exchange” technique. Also not to be missed: Alex demonstrates how to design and draw a custom double-feathered wreath for quilting.
Margarete Heinisch's quilt, In the Heart of Europe, graced the cover of Quilter's Newsletter in 1998 (just one of three of her quilts that have graced the cover). The quilt honors Margarete's Viennese heritage. Each dancing couple represents one of Austria's nine provinces and the border of grapes symbolizes the wines which are produced in the country. The outer border illustrates scenes of her family. The quilt is 76" x 80" and is made of cotton, silk and wool. It is hand appliqued, machine pieced, embroidered, and has ink drawings. It is in Margarete's personal collection.

Once you've seen Show 802: Tips and Tricks for Triangles and Strips with Edyta Sitar, you'll want to start right away to create your own half-square triangle quilt. Head on over to the Forum and in the Scrap Bag look for Friendship Triangle Exchange. Post a message and see what other members might like to work out an exchange of half-square triangles. Your group might want to exchange 30's repros, or 1800 fabrics, or batiks. It will be up to you and your friends to decide.
Once you have some results, post them in Show & Tell, beginning 1/17/2011.
Many quilt shops have done this with amazing results. For example, The Granary in Sunnyvale, CA exchanged over 14,000 triangles. The shop created Cinnamon Sticks, which consisted of two pieces of 6 1/2" x 22" fabric (one light, one dark) rolled up with one sheet of triangle paper. The Cinnamon Sticks each made 28 half-square triangles at 2" finished. Customers brought in their finished 2" half-square triangles sorted into separate plastic bags by fabric. The Granary then took all the half-square triangles and redistributed them so that each customer received half-square triangles in a variety of fabrics.
Here's are some of the results from their proud customers as they show off their friendship triangle quilts.
Sometimes we are asked to go to places that maybe, just maybe, we don't want to go. The Auto Show is just not "our thing" (unless you're TQS member CMOELLERS). Instead of dreading the experience, we used it as a basis for inspiration. Open your eyes and you'll see fabulous design work that could be applied to your quilting. Watch and see!
We are having fun in Florida with a great group of quilters because we always follow the local laws!
Today is Alex' birthday! To celebrate we are going to share one of her favorite videos, Alex Anderson: The History of Hair updated just in time with her very latest book, Paper Piecing with Alex Anderson, 2nd edition. Of course, it also includes her latest styles...To be fair, we've included one of Ricky's latest looks as well, see below.
Poking around the Internet, you never know what you might find. Quilter extraordinaire, Karen McTavish, recently posted this wonderful page from a Singer Sewing Manual. I'm sure we all still follow these rules to this day, right? FYI, Tater Patch Quilts in Merrill, Oregon is a wonderful quilt shop. It's definitely worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood.
