The
Sisterhood of the Traveling Triangles has some exciting news to share.

All information regarding the exchange has been moved to Chapter 2 - Sisterhood of the Traveling Triangles Exchange on the ForumThis is where regular updates on how many packages and HSTs have been received will be provided.

Remember, if you have any questions, ask them in the Forum.

As of February 3, 22 packages containing 6,520 HSTs have been received. So far, all are from the U.S., but one is on its way from Suffolk, England.

Please remember to send Debbie an email when you mail your package.  If you don't, she won't be able to notify you when it arrives.  Also, please remember to add the number of HSTs on the outside of the mailing envelope/box along with your ScreenName.

Various sized envelopes are working great and they are preferrred over boxes, so please consider that when you're ready to mail. FYI: An envelope received yesterday was a 12"x 9" cardboard Priority and it comfortably held 700 neatly packaged HSTs.  Since there will be over 600 packages received, the more compact envelopes will be much easier to manage. Also it is extremely important that you make sure that your return envelope/box is sufficient size to send them back to you.

And, if that is not enough...Alex and Ricky have joined the SoTTT exchange.  They will be signing their HSTs on the fabric instead of on the paper.  You could receive an autographed HST!  Don't forget that Edyta is also in the mix. Can't wait to see what happens.

While in Kenya, Alex, Ricky and their touring friends visited the Kazuri Bead Factory.  Kazuri means small and beautiful in Swahili.  It is hand-painted ceramic jewelry shaped by hand by one of the 300 local women employed by the factory.  The beads are kiln fired once, glazed, and fired again before they are used.

The factory was founded by Lady Susan Wood in 1975 as a means to create employment for struggling single mothers.  It is located in Karen, named after Karen Blixen of 'Out of Africa' fame, on part of her original farm. The area is just a few miles outside of Nairobi and lies under the Ngong Hills.

Unlike mass-produced goods, Kazuri jewelry is unique and one-of-a kind.  The little quirks and trademarks represent the individual people who make the beads, paint them, and give them a soul as well as beauty.

Many Kazuri styles are named after areas, tribes and other features of the Kenyan landscape; evocative names that resonate with the organic nature of the clay that comes from its earth. Each little piece is like a piece of Kenya.

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, so we thought we'd revisit TQS Member Margo's quilt, "From the Heart." She took the basic layout from the 2010 Star Crazy BOM, but replaced the sampler stars with hand-embroidered redwork. She also simplified the piecing in the borders.

The redwork designs were created by Alex. The one exception was the daisy design, which Margo created herself. To see Margo and Alex in front of the award-winning quilt, click here.

With the excitement of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Triangle Exchange still fresh in the air, we want to ensure that all those beautiful triangles arrive to the sorting station in the most organized and easy-to-distribute way possible. After all, there will be several hundred thousand of these little bits of fabric traveling around the world! At last count, there are 615 participants in the following locations: the US, Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Norway, Australia, Panama, New Zealand, Germany, South Korea, and Switzerland!! So, as you get ready to send out your triangles, keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Each triangle should still have the paper attached. Please mark (on the paper) your name, state, and country. This way, the recipient can enjoy knowing from whom they have received their triangles.
  • Place all your triangles in a plastic baggie. Clearly mark the baggie with your profile name and the number of triangles included.
  • Be sure to include a pre-addressed, stamped envelope so that the organizers can mail triangles back to you.
  • Place everything in a sealed envelope/box and mail to the following address:  Please note the address correction highlighted in yellow.  The address listed in the Newsletter was incorrect:

Spring still may be a few months away in your part of the world, but that's no reason you can't enjoy the bountiful new fabrics that P&B Textiles (Flora Bella) and Red Rooster Fabrics (Yippee...Daisies!) have coming to a quilt shop near you. Use these cheerful prints to make a fast-and-easy quilt featuring the Square Dance block that we found in Alex's book, Start Quilting...a great way to add a shot of color to your home decor.

To make a 6” finished Square Dance block:

CUT:

Cut 1 square 3 ½” x 3 ½” – This will be the center square.

Cut 2 rectangles 2” x 3 ½” – These will be the two side rectangles.

Cut 2 rectangles 2” x 6 ½” – These will be the top and bottom rectangles.

SEW:

Sew the 2” x 3 ½” side rectangles to each side of the center square.

Once they are attached, press the rectangles away from the center square.

Sew the 2” x 6 ½” rectangles to the top and the bottom of the square.

Press these rectangles away from the center square.

You have now completed one 6” finished Square Dance block.
