Sue Garman recently discovered this blog called the Star Crazy Log.  We figured we'd let it speak for itself. It shows what can happen when you are inspired by a quilt.

In October 2009 I had the opportunity to go to International Quilt Festival/Houston and work in The Quilt Shoppe booth for The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims. For three days I stood by Star Crazy, TQS's pieced 2010 Block of the Month. And fell in L.O.V.E.  Star Crazy was designed by the extremely talented Sue Garman.  It was a thrill to meet Sue and to talk to her about Star Crazy.

Here's what happened next.

I started Star Crazy Log, a blog devoted to 12 months of working together.  The response was more than I had hoped for.  We had 31 participants from all over the world. Spanning most the United States to Australia, Sweden,United Kingdom and Norway, we have spent a year getting to know each other through our love of quilting. We have shared our cultures, our family activities, and become good friends. To date, we have 119 followers, with 15,635 visits, and 28,716 page reviews.

What an adventure!

The Kenya Quilt Guild invited Alex, Ricky and their party of quilters to a meeting and exhibition of quilts. The quilts were outstanding but so were their stories about coming to and living in Africa. Here is a quilt showing the diverse countries that make up the guild.

Can't you just hear the pounding of the hooves, see the dirt flying through the air, feel the energy of the horses as they explode down the track?  Shirley Kelly has combined her love for horses and her love for quilting into this fabulous quilt, Two Minutes in May.  Her dad was a jockey, her grandfather used horses in his business, and her daughter's horses share her property.  I think Shirley might just know what she's quilting about.  Keen attention is paid to every detail of the horses' musculature and movement.  It seems as if they are coming right at you, better jump out of the way.

Two Minutes in May was completed in 1995.  It is 78" x 41" and made from cottons, hand-appliqued and pieced, and machine-quilted.

May1 - 91 pieces no rotation

May2 - 91 pieces with rotation

This year's Road to California quilt show had interesting and innovative quilts. Here are just a few from the exhibit to whet your appetite. There will be more to come. See if you don't recognize some of the quilts from our TQS friends.

Here is a wonderful collection of Rhapsody quilts for you to enjoy.  Some were started at Ricky's retreat or in his class, and some were created just by reading the book.  You'll be stunned by the beauty, creativity, and individual style present in every quilt. The inspiring music is La Veta Loca from Ricky's Sacred Age CD.

After watching the video, you might want to learn how to create your own Rhapsody quilt.  That's easy to do if you watch Episode 803: Create your Own Rhapsody Quilt: Part 1, followed by Episode 804: Create your Own Rhapsody Quilt: Part 2, available on February 14.

3498_http_wwwmuseumofcostumecouk_htmlcontent_gamehtml.jpgDo you like to play dress up?  Then this is the game for you.  It's up to you to dress the model in the clothing appropriate to her era.  You'll find it more than challenging unless you lived in that particular time period.

The game comes from the Museum of Costume in the UK.

3497_google_image_result_for_http_wwwgatewaytosedonacom_image_articles_1560_maryfisher2006.jpgWe're opening up an early episode this weekend featuring Mary Fisher, quilt artist, author, and AIDS activist.  As an ambassador for the United Nations AIDS program, she discusses how she uses her art to raise awareness about the impact of AIDS, especially on women.

In this episode she demonstrates unique ways of creating original fabric with stamps and block printing. These techniques are included in her African-themed quilts from her book, Abataka.
