Happy Valentine's Day! We are sending our love and appreciation to all our TQS members through these wonderful heart quilts from the Quilt Gallery. Enjoy!
The "Share the Love Contest" brought many great suggestions for me and how to handle Valentine's Day this year.
I have used several of your suggestions. We are making it a quilting day for Alex. I will handle all calls. Lunch will be delivered from our favorite diner and I will be cooking dinner (rain or shine at the BBQ).
I wrote a poem (Be Kind! It's the thought that counts) and I put it in a photo album with family pictures set with every 2 stanzas.
Here is the poem:
Dear Alex,
We met in college across a crowded ballroom.
You were not impressed, but I saw stars & moons.
Against advice we married young, or so it seemed.
Life alone can work, but it's better as a team.
Now we were dancing the steps of life together,
as we planned for tomorrow & prayed for forever.
Life changed abruptly when, without drugs, you had Joe.
The dance steps now faster, before we mastered the slow.
It took some begging to try for a girl so fair.
Soon with drug list in hand, we were joined by Adair.
Schools were a blur with lessons failed and lessons learned.
We pointed directions, and sometimes paths turned.
We got them through college and finally sober.
Their futures assured, while our finances smoldered.
Now the rooms are clean, dishes washed, tables dusted.
Our advice is sought & occasionally trusted.
I'm thankful for our love and your every wrinkle.
I'm sorry your Johnny Depp is a man who can't tinkle.
Life is so uncertain and our years could now be few.
Each morning I thank God for another day with you.

Yes, you can do it! Artist, teacher, and author Nancy Prince taught herself to "paint" with thread, and now she shares her "secrets."
Discover how to create an off-the-quilt thread painting: what stitches to use, how to size them, shade them, highlight and blend them.
With Nancy's guidance, learn to "pump up" a commercially printed fabric with thread and how to use your computer to convert a personal photo into a pattern.
Ricky concludes by sharing a video about the Colorado Quilt Council and the benefits of a state guild. Don't miss a minute!
Sadly Mary Kay Davis' (TQS web-reporter and beloved team member) husband Eric passed away Saturday, Feb 11 after collapsing while training for a marathon. He was a great support to Mary Kay with technical behind the scene contributions to TQS, and our hearts grieve for both Mary Kay and her beautiful sons.
Message from Mary Kay:
Eric could build just about anything from furniture and buildings to networks and circuit boards. He loved his children and spent hours playing catch and helping with homework. He loved to run and he encouraged his wife in all her endeavors, recently helping her complete a 5K in Disneyland. He enjoyed going to San Jose Sharks games, was happy when the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl, and loved watching his Wisconsin Badgers in the Rose Bowl.
Come and watch the "Moo"velous Cow Parade which recently stampeded through Road To California 2012. This exhibit was curated by Mary Lou Weidman & Melanie McFarland. Mary Lou and Mel challenged their friends to use the "Purple Cow" pattern from "Out of the Box with Easy Blocks" to create a "Moo"velous quilt.
The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative just completed its 6th year of existence. In that time they raised more than $690,000 for Alzheimer's research and they are only a few hundred quilts away from receiving their 10,000 Priority Quilt.
How about it TQS members? Why don't you submit a prioirity quilt and see if it can be the 10,000 quilt!
The rules are pretty basic: It can be no larger than 9" x 12" and must be a "quilt." Of course, there are a few more rules, you can see them by clicking on the button.
You can contribute a number of other ways as well by participating in the monthly auction or buying a quilt off the site directly. To learn more, click here.
(quilt: Leaves from Gida Lorre, Sao Paulo, Brazil, $45)
Joanne Baeth was the winner of the Excellence in Machine Quilting category at Road to California this year (2012). She was kind enough to talk to TQS about how she created her quilt, Great Blue Herons, including some of her quilting, painting, and blocking techniques.
Joanne's patience knew no bounds as this video was made in the middle of a very high traffic area with a very loud, but beautiful, harpist.

Artist, teacher, and author, and TQS guest, Nancy Prince, taught herself to "paint" with thread, and now she shares her "secrets." In Episode 1004, "Painting" with Thread, Alex discovers from Nancy how to create an off-the-quilt thread painting: what stitches to use, how to size them, shade them, highlight, and blend them. Nancy shows Ricky how to "pump up" a commercially printed fabric with thread and how to use his computer to convert a personal photo into a pattern.
The show is coming your way, Monday, February 13. Don't miss it!
And, Nancy also has a TQS classroom so you can learn more. Click here to visit Nancy's classroom.
