5167_san_jose_museum_of_quilts_and_textiles.jpgThe 5th Annual High Fiber Under Five Exhibit is being held October 20 - November 4, 2012 at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles in San Jose, CA.

For the past four years High Fiber has been the Museum’s signature benefit art sale created to generate support for both fiber artists and the Museum. A juried exhibition, High Fiber is an inspiring showcase for a wide variety of textile art forms including quilts, jewelry, tapestries, wall-hangings, sculpture, and wearable art where fiber plays a prominent role. All of the art in this exhibition is for sale at $500 or less, with a designated percentage of the proceeds donated to the Museum.

An secondary exhibit, FiberShots, is an additional opportunity for the public to purchase fiber art. FiberShots will feature 15” x 15” artful fiber work—traditional and contemporary/non-traditional—that will be sold for $100, directly in support of the Museum.

Executive Director Christine Jeffers notes, "It is our mission to promote the craft and history of textile and fiber art. This event presents a broad representation of fiber art and allows members of the public to purchase a piece, take it home, and become advocates for fiber art."

Artists included are: Candice Abraham, B. J. Adams, Pamela G. Allen, Deborah E. Babin, Nancy L. Bardach, Stella K. Belikiewicz, Lynne Brotman, Leslie Carabas, Dotti Cichon, Sandra Palmer Ciolino, Linda J. Lesson 2 is Ready in the Classroom.

The new Fabric Fancifications class provides a fabulous foundation for simple, successful quilt embellishments.

Join Lauren Vlcek, co-author of Fabric Embellishing: The Basics & Beyond, as she guides you through a number of brilliant ways to embellish this quilt sampler which you will create as you follow along in the classroom. Included in this classroom are raw edge applique, couching, basic hand stitching, and basic bead embroidery techniques.

As an added bonus, anyone who submits photos of their work in progress will be eligible to win a signed copy of Lauren's quilt.  Each week, as you follow along, you can submit a photo of your work.  This submission will enter you into a drawing for the Fabric Fancifications sampler created and signed by Lauren.

To make your supplies easier, Lauren has created a TQS Classroom Companion Embellishments Pack designed to accompany the class. This pack includes small amounts of most of the embellishments needed for the project. This pack is not a complete kit for the classroom project. Students will need to provide quilting supplies and sewing threads from their own stash.  The pack is available from Lauren for $35.  Click here to purchase the Companion Pack.

Visit the classroom to watch Lauren's  Introductory Lesson which is free to all TQS members. This lesson outlines what you'll need to complete the class including a Fabric Fancification's shopping list.

Classes begin on October 30 with Lesson 1 - Raw Edge Applique.

Lesson 2 is ready now.  (People in Houston loved the sampler and were excited about the class.

We return to the home of Betsy and Richard Ehrenberg in Santa Fe to welcome self-described "late bloomer" -AKA fiber artist, teacher, and author - Karen Eckmeier, who demonstrates how she uses overlapping and topstitched fabric strips to create her delightful "accidental landscape" quilts.

In addition, Karen shares ideas for adapting her versatile technique for use on garments, and Lilo and Elena model some of Karen's wearable creations. (You'll need to watch to discover why you'll always find a "lucky lizard" stitched into Karen's show quilts.)

The episode concludes with a tour of the Ehrenberg home, Casa de Vidrio (House of Glass), which houses the couple's amazing collection of contemporary art glass.
