It's that time again. The annual Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative celebrity showdown of fabulous quilts made by twelve of the industry's most talented quilt artists for auction with all profits to fund Alzheimer's research. To make things even easier, this year's auction will be held on line. Don't miss this fabulous opportunity to own a piece of work by one of your favorite artists, many of whom have been featured on TQS.
Just as a quilter might work with thousands of small pieces of fabric to create a larger work, Ghanaian born artist El Anatsui uses discarded bits of aluminum bottle caps to create monumentally sized works that are both visually stunning while at the same time incredibly flexible.
Each individual piece of aluminum is attached to another using small bits of wire which are then built as units. Units are joined together to form a larger piece. The entire labor intensive process can take many months.
Both the Denver Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum offer you the opportunity to see his work in person.
"In his most recent metal wall sculptures, which have brought him global acclaim, Anatsui recycles bottle caps from a West African distillery in his home town, piecing them together to form monumental curtains patterned with row upon row of different brands of liquor bottle caps. It has sometimes been said that these sculptures and other of his artworks are about recycling, but that is not true. Anatsui is ardent that his use of found materials is about transformation—giving objects new lives as they are transformed into something else."
Denver Art Museum exhibit runs through December 30,2012.
Brooklyn Museum exhibit from February 8-August 4, 2013.

Sherry Reynolds' quilt, America, Let It Shine, has won more awards. She has taken the Grand Prize at the International Quilt Festival in Houston! Congratulations Sherry! Can't wait to see what you do next.
Some of the other shows where her quilt has won awards include the AQS Lancaster show, where it won Best Machine Workmanship and at the Machine Quilters Exposition, where it won Best of Show. This quilt is no stranger to awards and in this quick interview taped at Road to California 2012, Sherry talks about winning Viewer's Choice at Road to California and also about the historical references in her quilt.
There was a harp right next to her quilt. Sorry it is so loud. It is not our added music.
Come visit with Karen Eckmeier as she welcomes TQS to her home in Kent, Connecticut. Karen shares the beautiful views from her home through the different seasons and gives us a glimpse into her creative world as she shows off her Quilted Lizard Studio.

Vases, Birds, and Other Things, created by Kim McLean and quilted by Kay Fernihough, was on exhibit as part of theBaltimore Album Review II: Baltimore's Daughters -- Friends Stitch Past to Future at the International Quilt Festival in Houston 2010. It is unusual, not in what is represented, but in Kim's selection of fabrics which reflect today's colors and contemporary patterns, particularly Kaaffe Fasset.
This is not your ordinary Baltimore Album quilt!
