During Lester's visit this morning Libby was awake and a bit more responsive than yesterday. She is unable to speak right now, but she communicated by blinking her eyes in order to answer questions. She also smiled at Lester a few times. She is moving her head left to right a bit and she squeezed Lester's hand several times - once was a strong squeeze. She remains in critical condition, but we can celebrate another baby step in the right direction this morning.

Why would a smooth polyester thread shred and break when sewing, while an all cotton thread will not?

Is the problem with the:

  • Needle?
  • Thread?
  • Machine?

Looks like it could be the machine.

Here's the answer from Superior Threads:

Thread travels from the spool or cone, through thread guides, the tension discs, more thread guides, the take up lever, and the needle.  Over time, small grooves may be worn, or rough spots develop, along the thread path.  If a cotton thread hits a rough spot or burr, it snags a piece of the thread (creating lint), and the thread keeps moving along without any problems.  However, if a smooth multi-filament polyester thread hits a rough spot or burr, the rough spot snags the thread. There is no lint or spun piece of thread to give, so the thread is damaged and shreds or breaks.  The solution is to make sure there are no rough spots along the thread path.

Captain John brought us back a sample of large wall quilts from AQS Quilt Week Paducah 2013.  You'll be astounded by the beauty of the piecing and quilting.  The handwork is beyond compare.

Libby is waking up! Lester was with her twice this morning. She was awake for 20 minutes the first time and about 30 minutes the second time. She responded to his voice by blinking and raising an eyebrow. As you can imagine, this was a great relief since it is the first signs of returning to consciousness since the surgery last Wednesday.

She is still in critical but stable condition. This status is predicted to remain until Tuesday or even later. But we can all celebrate this change of events.

Please send cards (humorous or otherwise), and quilted cards to:

A new exhibit just opened at the deYoung Museum in San Francisco. It is called From the Exotic to the Mystical: Textile Treasures from the Permanent Collection

Here's the latest information from their site.

"Drawn from the Museums' extensive collection of textile arts, this delightful selection represents 15 centuries of textile arts and includes finely detailed English embroideries, playful Spanish laces, magnificent tapestries, and a set of elaborate French ecclesiastical vestments from the reign of Louis XIV. Allegorical imagery serves as the overarching theme of the exhibition, which further explores the subjects of exoticism, mythology, religious symbolism, and the fantasized animal world.

From the Exotic to the Mystical offers a glimpse into the breadth of the Museums' textile collections and showcases many true masterpieces from the European holdings. The exhibition also honors Anna Gray Bennett, who died in 2012. Bennett was the founding curator for textile arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and a champion for the study of European textile traditions."

The exhibit runs May 4, 2013 - August 4, 2013.  The museum is located at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.  Click here for hours and admission.
