Did you know that it is Longarm Month? How did Longarm Month get started? Here is the story:

Capt'n John- "I did a search to learn when longarm month was celebrated. September is Sewing Month. April is Serger Month.  It turns out that there wasn't a Longarm Month. Sooooo, I invented it. Longarm month is officially November.  Why? Because we say so. We need to celebrate the professional longarm artists and manufacturers that have brought us this amazing tool that has revolutionized the quilting industry.

I have started a new website at longarmmonth.org. The site is just coming alive and will grow now that I am back from Houston. We will have lessons, Company highlights, quilt pictures and more. Sharon Schamber is even sending us her new DVD to put up on the site later this month.

Here is how you can help me. Just click the button to visit the site. This will tell Google that the site is important and it will gain in search value. Visit the site a few times and check out the new information that will appear each week.  Starting this weekend, you will be able to enter to win a Gammill Charm--their wonderful new sit-down longarm that will fit in almost any home.

Thank you for your help!"    6068_button_longarmmonth.png

Japanese Quilts - Modern Day was a special exhibit at PIQF 2013, curated by Yoshiko Katagiri, here is what she had to say about the exhibit,

"An amazing quilt show was held in Japan in 1976 - “Abstract Art in American Quilts.” The same exhibit was shown in New York in 1971. Since then, quilt makers and quilt fans in Japan have been increasing in number year after year. They all have the love of fabric in common. Yoshiko will show you Japanese quilts “of this moment” through this exhibition. I hope you will be happy to see them."

And you thought tulle was just for weddings.  Take a look at these amazing tulle portraits created by Benjamin Shine.  He manipulates the tulle by pleating and ironing and whatever it takes to achieve his vision.

6041_1weekendfun.jpgI just returned from the Pacific International Quilt Show. Every year it seems there is a special exhibit that really touches me. This year it was an exhibit of 23 quilts called The Tall Girl Series: A Body of Work, by artist Carol Larson. I had heard the story behind these quilts before I came to the show. But to see the quilts, and read the stories behind each one touched me in a very deep way.

The quilts tell the story. In Carol's words:

in 1965 when i was 17 years old and 78.5 inches long, i was surgically shortened 6 inches with the intention of giving me a “normal” life. so begins the introduction of the “tall girl series: a body of work.”

this series highlights the 40+ years since the three surgeries that broke my body, nearly crushed my spirit and forever changed my life.

I know its a stretch, but what it made me think of is how many of us with “weight issues” are willing to go to extremes in order to achieve a body that we think will make us “fit in” and be “happy.” Every day people undergo unnecessary surgery (and not just us weight control people.) Surgery is serious business. And then of course, there are the “lesser things” that we do to achieve that magic “goal weight” and/or body image. Like the woman I just talked to today, who is thinking about going on a 500 calorie a day diet. Even though she has done it before, and she has experienced re-gaining all the weight lost on such a restrictive diet, she is still considering it.
I wish you could have seen the whole exhibit, with the unbelievably painful things that Carol experienced during her life, and how she healed herself through this series of quilts. Here is a link to an article that tells a little more about her story.
If you'd like to read more about the exhibit and my thoughts, check out my blog at Debby Weighs In.

Pat Holly made this quilt for the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (www.AlzQuilts.orgCelebrity Invitational Quilt Auction which begins November 1.  This quilt measures 15" x 15."

Artist Statement: When I found out this would be the last year for the celebrity auction, I thought about the previous little quilts I have made. I designed this quilt using elements from these previous quilts, kind of like little bits of memory. I think about those suffering from Alzheimer's and how they are left with just bits of memories.

The auction is a rare opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind work of art and benefit the AAQI. This year's participants include some of the giants of quilting, many of whom have joined us here at TQS.  The auction will be held the first 10 days of November.  Click here for more details and to see the quilts.

Here's a fun modern pillow we found at WeAllSew from Bernina.  Vanessa Christenson has created a piece of wonderful fall decor to enjoy year round.

Just in time for fall, it's a great way to use up those "leaf"tover 2 1/2" strips.
